What crap! It won't be downtown Melbourne in the CBD or in Sydney ... it will much more obviously hit a rural community - most likely First Nations people - and there will be no community consultation at all LIKE AUKUS ITSELF, THE NUCLEAR WASTE WILL BE IMPOSED

To be honest the Australian electorate should have seen that prior to the last election Now we’re in bigger trouble until voters get rid of the WHOLE duopoly

It's possible either nuclear destruction ( perhaps Netanyahu's version of Hitler's bunker farewell when finally cornered ) or climate change will take us out first.

It’s possible and more likely that the world order is changing and we find ourselves adrift - not necessarily to a better world but certainly a different world order that is not centered around the west That’s what children and grandchildren will wonder about What did we not do to address issues

I'm harder at work as an age pensioner on these projects than ever I was before. On all fronts. I do think that global geopolitical events will catch the Aussie ruling elites napping (comatose actually, still living a colonial white supremacist delusion). I urge young 'uns to position for that.

I think a good deal of us (hopefully) recognise that scuppering one deal with a preferred supplier (France), and doing the exact same thing with another contract (AUKUS) would not be a good look regardless of who was in power at the time. I mean, what are you proposing? We buy Russian subs?

aug 13, 2025, 2:59 am • 0 0 • view
avatar
raven-mumur @raven-murmur.bsky.social

Subs, for sure, shallow-water operable for defence of Australian waters, not designed to sit offshore China and blockade shipping routes or act as a forward threat. Thereafter, invest in maritime drones and missile tech for land defence. We want a military for defence, not colonial misadventures.

Who would we buy them from? Our EU partners have been burnt, and you're saying that US subs are unacceptable, so what country do we then buy them from? What I'm getting at is that Labor is in an unenviable position. Even you would see risk in positioning ourselves as an unreliable partner.

raven-mumur @raven-murmur.bsky.social

Sweden, Japan, Germany all manufacture subs to contract. There are others. "Even you"? That aside, are you seriously suggesting that the US might view Australia as an unreliable partner? With Trump as Prez? Us, unreliable?

Labor bought itself to this position - it had no need to follow the LNP IPA and Morrison, it chose to do so It chose to continue imposing AUKUS and leave us all in a ridiculous position. with no mandate I call that betrayal We will have no submarines at all once the Collins class subs retire

The poison chalice had been served and drunk from the moment the Liberals cancelled the French sub deal. From there, our fate was sealed. Breaking a second oath will just make it worse. For our reputation to be restored, Labor’s hand is forced to honour the Liberal’s deal.

When it comes to security pacts with allies, then it isn’t too far of a stretch to liken it to an oath… I know, sometimes I get a bit poetic… but you get what I mean.

For us to lead from behind you mean? I've got a better idea .. why don't we have the confidence to say to ourselves that AUKUS was never mandated, it was imposed and Australians do not want nuclear-powered subs, AUKUS must not proceed?

Forgive me, but doesn’t this conflict with basic civics? The Liberals were elected, and we gave them a mandate. That’s Democracy 101. Even opposition parties have to respect that, especially when it comes to agreements with foreign nations. Rejecting these principles is crazy talk.

Nobody gave Morrison a "mandate" to act on his own without even Cabinet involvement to stick up a secret deal and impose a $1TRILLION + AUKUS on Australians and effectively kill both out defence and foreign policies Our Westminster system of democracy does not allow decisions to be made in that way

Nothing good can come from a deeper association with America. To anyone who doubts this, you have to ask.. "Have you looked at the place recently ??" It's not an aberration. It's their new reality. The place is lost for at least two generations.
