It’s not unusual to have a “ground delay” or “ground stop” where flights to a certain destination are held because that airport is too busy to accept them. Normally they aren’t cancelled but maybe the delay would have been too long? Active ground delays are listed on this page: nasstatus.faa.gov
Often it’s because the weather got worse and planes need to space out more, so there aren’t enough landing slots per hour for the number of flights scheduled. Ground holds avoid the flights needing to fly in a holding pattern for a long time.
