Why is it impossible to find clothes that I like? I mean, really? I want: a thigh-length WOOL cardigan in navy blue or bottle green; a pair of flat black court shoes; a crimson linen shirt without frills on. I don't want bits of chain, bits of plastic, frills, pintucks, redundant buttons . . .

Is it what you're looking for otherwise? Try country clothing type stores generally, more likely to have timeless stuff (rather than fashionable). Linen shirt; if you want 100% linen, nice quality, you're best to make it yourself, but wait until Fabworks has it's annual spring linen sale/restock.
I've found one, I think. £85, though! Am better at knitting than sewing and that tells you what you need to know about how bad I am at sewing.
The shirt? If I was going to make you a good linen shirt, I would charge £100 (2 metres at £20/metre, plus pattern, plus making). £85 is a reasonable price.

I've been looking for several years and am yet to find one. I once bought a lime green blouse, and it took me an hour to decided to buy it. The first day I wore it to work, seven people complimented me on how nice it looked. M&S had a muddy lime green in during the summer but I want bright green.

I like scarlet but I’ve got a jumper in that colour and this year I’m trying to be a bit more careful and not buy multiple garments in the same hue. I shall buy less but buy better

I have two identical black merino cardigans because I had a menopause moment and forgot I'd already bought one. I wear them INCESSANTLY, in fact I was wearing one of them today.

In a world where I can get a jumper for £25, my favourite cost me £100 in a sale 7 years ago. I had to take a deep breath, but it's good quality wool and it would have cost me that to buy the wool let alone knit it.
Ouch.
I've learned front knitsky that there are people who will undo a whole knitted garment if they don't like it. It's logical, but I don't think I could cope with the emotional trauma of doing it.

I don't think I ever have, but our collection of felt pot plant stands testify to my willingness to boil stuff I've knitted to fuck and then to cut it up once it's shrunk to a third of its previous size
🤯 I've undone a garment someone else was throwing out and used it to knit something for me. That was OK because I had nothing invested in it. Like putting the wrong fuel in the car, I boiled one treasured jumper and have been on high alert ever since.
I used not to have a washing machine so I took my alpaca and silk Jaeger jumper, months in the making, to the laundrette. When I pulled it out of the machine, I did not recognise it.

It's ridiculous. A winter garment is mainly for keeping you warm. How it looks is of secondary importance.
Maybe look at "coatigans" (horrible portmanteau word)?
I discovered that word recently on a clothing site. They weren't what I was looking for. I just want a warm cardigan that isn't heavy like a coat, to wear indoors or under a raincoat. With pockets. That I can button or zip closed. Why are clothing designers STILL making women's wear sans pockets?!
I make them... (there's a Simplicity 'pattern hacking' one); have made it in boiled wool, and in heavy cotton knit. Pockets in all, come down almost to my knees.
Pockets are a must.
Also, it's impossible to find a coat not in black or white long enough to cover your knees. When it gets cold here, you need a long coat so your legs don't freeze! It'd be nice if they came in pretty colours so you don't blend into the asphalt. Black/grey in winter ain't chic. It's depressing. Sigh.
Sewing is my superpower! I have waisted, full-skirted, ankle-length coats in scarlet, and a fairly in-your-face blue, as well as navy. M6800 modified. (I live outside Edinburgh).

There are some fabulous wool tweed coats about, but so very very expensive. I keep hoping one will turn up in a charity shop, but they've got very good and spotting things like that and putting them on web sites to sell for serious money.

I have a nice new wool cardigan from the men's department of Uniqlo. Deliciously soft and cuddly. The women's versions were far too short
I got a beautiful knee-length (on me) pure wool charcoal grey cardigan with shawl collar and pockets for £10 on Vinted. Maybe worth looking there and then dying the right cardigan navy or bottle green?
When I’ve finished my current knit, I may well do another. People don’t seem to knit 4/ply much these days, either.
I'm a very slow occasional knitter - but even then I can't remember the last time I knitted 4 ply.
