I think newer residence halls have different layouts etc (still the same oak furniture though) but a lot of the fancy rooms you see online are parents going overboard with decorating and just eating the damage fees, or so I have been told.

My employer (big state university) has some newer halls with suites and private bathrooms but also plenty of the classic style.
None of the dorms at UK are more than 15 years old. They entered into a partnership back in 2010 to build all new dorms. They are INSANE.
Think granite countertops, mostly suite style, no sharing bathrooms on one floor.
