Yeah there is literally no logical connection to "my kid has a smartphone" and "they are safer in case of the occurrence of this black swan event"

But the smartphone can be used as a projectile to throw at the shooter, therefore they should always have their phones on them

I'm not saying it's logical, I'm specifically saying I can see how parents wind up reacting irrationally to the idea of their kids getting randomly murdered when actual solutions like gun control don't appear to be on the table.

I don’t think my kid is safer, but I’d be so desperate for them to tell me what’s going on and if they’re alive. (To be clear, I think they should take phones away during the school day, but I feel a pang about it)

Agree, but also not hard to understand why parents aren't exactly reacting rationally to the very real problem of pervasive school shootings in the absence of any kind of movement on gun control.
