My realization some years back was that no band whose primary influences are Phish and/or the Dead has ever held my attention. And those are obv both favs of mine!

About a year ago I heard an Eggy jam that sounded pretty good, so I put on a full show. The main takeaway was “I could just listen to Phish instead”
10x better live.
Yeah exactly. It's not that they're bad at what they do, and people who just want an unending supply of that 3.0 jam vibe and its minor variants should be and are into it. They're not wrong. But I love dozens of styles of music and spend my time looking for new stuff & building a diverse collection
Taper’s Choice is a helluva lot of fun and pretty damn interesting to me. But I’m not a big Phish fan so maybe I just don’t hear the similarities
Taper’s Choice is amazing. One of the best bands around when they can be around.
Agreed!!!!
I have not heard them yet but I’ll check them out.

I like taper's, they have a self aware sense of humor which is perhaps their one really phishlike attribute
I like Eggy and have enjoyed some of their shows, but have also realized that, as with Goose, my admiration for them has natural limits, at least in part due to what you said.
