i know it's bad form to talk about negative reviews, but i am losing my mind at a reader who DNFed & one starred moonflow because "there's an animal death content warning and the book introduces a cat and how dare you kill a cat" and it's like, i didn't. the cat doesn't die. the cat is fine :|
Honestly the *entire book* is primarily concerned with the safety and well-being of the cat. I cannot think of a single more pro-cat horror novel than this.

I'm actually more likely to read it now. I love horror, but hate pet death, especially since most is needless and usually for shock value. Kill and torture as many humans as you want, but leave the fluffy ones out of it.

It's less bad form to talk about negative reviews, especially like this. It's WORSE form and why at least two people are forever on my shitlist to screencap your negative reviews and go "get a load of this guy." You mentioned no names, no screencaps, and it's a silly dead dove situation.
If you see the content warning and then get mad about something that the content warning clearly warned you about, that's on you.

I have severe anxiety triggers for cat death, for mental health reasons. Reading about it or seeing it (even implied) will leave me in a wreck for an hour. That said. That is my issue to deal with. This person assumed a whole lot and then made it YOUR problem. Just take a pass, my guy.
People need to take accountability for their own needs, and not expect strangers to do it for them. You are so kind for using content warnings. That’s all I hope for. And if I don’t get them? Doesthedogdie.com is real. It’s okay to have things that make you DNF. It’s not okay to put that on you.

Yea, in my experience, popular reviewers glaze tf out of the blandest Big 5 horror releases and then absolutely roast anything outside of a very narrow margin of acceptability. Mid Big 5 book abt a haunted house: "plot was meh and I can't remember the characters. 5 stars!" Unique indie book: "🧐"

I remember critics mocked Independence Day for the crowd-pleasing bit where a dog escapes a tunnel fire that incinerates hundreds of non-character humans. Feel like there's been a weird cultural shift since then, to the point that no one would criticize that scene today.
