Why do you think that? My gut (and brain) agree with you but I’m no expert. Is it because they haven’t laid off enough competent staff yet and so there would be a leak if they tried to fluff the numbers? Just curious

Because the BLS is stuffed to the gills with principled, experienced civil servants that would be sprinting to the press at top speed if they were being screwed with.
