They're so regressive that effectively they are a tax cut on the very wealthy, which is all that these people care about.

You can collect taxes as people earn money, or as they spend money. For people who live paycheck to paycheck, spending all they earn, it matters little. For the rich who don’t spend all their income it’s night and day. Tariffs, like sales tax, ARE highly regressive.
