One of the things that drew me to being leftist in the first place was that this side seemed to value basic decency, kindness, and compassion. That feels like it's being thrown out the window.

I'm sorry you went through that. And it's not like, behavior I'd want from a politician normally. But with Trump, is it really bullying or just turning his own shit back on him? I want kindness and respect too but Trump is so far past deserving that. Obviously you have the right to your feelings.

I honestly think this tactic is an exception to the rules thing. GOP and Trump are sick people, they abuse and punch down constantly and have for years. Harsh mockery which contains truths is self defense. Just my opinion of course.

My thing is that the mockery clearly doesn't actually work, as he just either doubles down or worse retaliates against it somehow. It certainly doesn't do anything to change or moderate his behavior in a good direction.

Thus far every Newsom supporter I've talked to: 1. Gets mouth-frothing temper tantrum angry when I suggest actually supporting one of the many Democrats also calling out Trump who *aren't* anti-trans. 2. Downplays transgender rights as somehow unimportant.

3. Often they also batshit crazily carry on about "purity politics" like their mind is literally incapable of registering the existence of said other non-bigot Democrats or that you're SUPPOSED to choose the most ideal person during the primary! I see no sign these people aren't fully on board.

It's really the whole "purity politics" angle making me wonder what's wrong with everyone's brain. The Purity Problem is when during the *general* election someone would rather let a much worse *Republican* win over a Democrat. Seeing people invoke it before there's even a primary is like lolwhut?

Oh right, and 4. many of them also start openly expressing anti-transgender sentiments themselves and going "Newsom is right, though" when pressed. Which tells me a not-insignificant number of his current supporters considered his anti-trans attitudes a feature but just don't want to admit it.

Well, I agree that those people suck and I don't like rabid support of anyone, personally. I mean, has MAGA taught ppl nothing? I'm just saying for me personally, I've been liking the Trump bashing and reposting it but I don't really support Newsom for higher office at all. So it's not a forgone

I admit it doesn't help my opinion that even if Newsom had zero problematic politics I still don't like what he's doing. As I noted I think Trump bashing not only drags down the conversation but Trump also often reacts to mockery with doubling down/retaliation, not improvement. That could get ugly.

And I think the gerrymandering thing is really bad as it's not just Newsom's mouth writing checks he may not be able to cash, it's him writing checks for the whole Democratic Party that Dems might not be able to cash. If they can't it will in turn be actively detrimental to Dems' public perception.

Yeah, it could definitely backfire on us. Tho I doubt anything will make Trump do better. The best scenario with the 'maps' would be Texas abandoning their plan (or Trump ordering them to) out of fear Newsom could pull it off. But yeah, if blue states try to gerrymander and fail...yeah,

It's not a good look for them and could damage midterm turnout and morale if ppl think they're 'failures'. Sigh. Part of me dreads midterms and part of me wants them over with so we can at least know where we're gonna stand.
