Otomo could've made five movies out of what he had up to that point. He probably made the best possible one.
(Whilst spending so much money no-one in Japan would ever make an anime like it again.)
Yeah I would be curious to learn more about the production of it. As what is on screen seems to be completely without production limitation. There is so much depth to it. Really a testament to human craft.
I think it was a unique moment. Otomo had boundless respect and it was the last gasp of the Bubble Era. Also, he studied the industry and knew exactly what he wanted.
Such a confident execution too.
