President. In bed (minus brain)

Are we forgetting the wine bottle scene? That traumatised me in my 30s.

D'Angelo saw the strings, but String saw D'Angelo...
Mark Gilleece (@recklessmg.bsky.social) reply parent
They don't care. They don't care. The people driving SUVs don't care about anyone or anything outside of their vehicle. Their driving habits, attitudes and ability are all reflective of this. They will kill you, and blame you for your own death. They don't care.
Mark Gilleece (@recklessmg.bsky.social) reply parent
Agreed, but I think he's being disingenuous when he blames VFX primarily for that inflation. And I'm a fan of the man.
Mark Gilleece (@recklessmg.bsky.social) reply parent
Even with a dataset entirely trained on existing assets, GenAI will be useless to Cameron. He pushed a VFX shot in the first movie to 96 takes. Not a live action shot, a VFX shot. Nothing I've seen of GenAI suggests an ability to iterate with that precision and specificity.
Mark Gilleece (@recklessmg.bsky.social) reply parent
Now that's the way to do it! My last words? A whispered "No notes."
Mark Gilleece (@recklessmg.bsky.social) reply parent
Yup. He's swinging for the fences, is old Rid. I'd argue that he's still stymied by issues he's faced throughout his career - adhd storytelling, visuals at the expense of all else - but you can't argue with the numbers. He shoots and the audience turns up.
Mark Gilleece (@recklessmg.bsky.social) reply parent
This show has been a interval of pure joy in my week.
Mark Gilleece (@recklessmg.bsky.social) reply parent
I think he knows he has to be seen to engage with it, but much like the Terminator sequels, I don't think he's too concerned with the outcome.
Mark Gilleece (@recklessmg.bsky.social) reply parent
He effectively retired creatively after the first movie. I'd love to see him tackle headier material - his collaboration with Soderbergh on Solaris was fascinating - but I think these days he enjoys the process more than the finished product.
Mark Gilleece (@recklessmg.bsky.social) reply parent
Okay. It appears to be reinstated. My advice would be to make sure all your addresses are in order, try not to reset your password soon after you've verified, and most importantly, speak to a real human agent, if possible.
Mark Gilleece (@recklessmg.bsky.social) reply parent
It seems I'm still logged in on ebay.ie ... I'm sure that'll be nuked soon enough. I wonder if the password issue was because I was trying to log in on ebay.co.uk ? Be careful out there.
Mark Gilleece (@recklessmg.bsky.social) reply parent
The best part? They just sent me a transcript of my last customer service chat interaction, but because I'd opted for 'text only' emails, I can only access it in my account... which I've now been locked out of. Outstanding.
Mark Gilleece (@recklessmg.bsky.social) reply parent
Was it because one of the items I was selling was a lighter, but I hadn't indicated it was drained of fuel? It seems I'll never know.
Mark Gilleece (@recklessmg.bsky.social) reply parent
I reset my password after Google's password manager indicated it couldn't log in. Was this too close the verification attempt? (which I seemed to pass without issue) Was is my dispatch address being different to my current buyer address?
Mark Gilleece (@recklessmg.bsky.social)
Wow. eBay just permanently suspended my account. Unappealable. After asking me to verify my identity. They won't even tell me what I did wrong. More than 15 years with a flawless record. Gone, just like that.
Mark Gilleece (@recklessmg.bsky.social) reply parent
"This time it will be different." - Every dictator-adjacent corpse in history.
Mark Gilleece (@recklessmg.bsky.social) reply parent
How is this supposed to work? The overseas seller collects the import duties on behalf of the U.S. Government? And then what?
Mark Gilleece (@recklessmg.bsky.social) reply parent
Well, that's art.
Mark Gilleece (@recklessmg.bsky.social) reply parent
Holleeee shit that's sinister.
Mark Gilleece (@recklessmg.bsky.social) reply parent
Begging for a Reform government, at this rate. Oblivious to how their heads will be first on the block.
Mark Gilleece (@recklessmg.bsky.social) reply parent
It took me a while to get the 'joke' of the movie. Once I did, it all clicked.
Mark Gilleece (@recklessmg.bsky.social) reply parent
It's an extraordinary performance. I Hope Ehrenreich sticks at it long enough to win his McConnaissance.
Mark Gilleece (@recklessmg.bsky.social) reply parent
Executives have to make decisions to justify their paychecks. And offset their insecurities.
Mark Gilleece (@recklessmg.bsky.social) reply parent
Sorry to wade in. I get red mist with this guy. And I'm right there with you. Even him getting as far as a televised debate will do untold damage.
Mark Gilleece (@recklessmg.bsky.social) reply parent
He did himself and his mates some service. If the state benefitted, it was a bonus.

Every Warner's executive for the new few weeks: "Who's decision was the moles?" "Those are tracking markers." "Okay. Yeah. I knew that."
Mark Gilleece (@recklessmg.bsky.social) reply parent
I think it was a unique moment. Otomo had boundless respect and it was the last gasp of the Bubble Era. Also, he studied the industry and knew exactly what he wanted.
Mark Gilleece (@recklessmg.bsky.social) reply parent
(Whilst spending so much money no-one in Japan would ever make an anime like it again.)
Mark Gilleece (@recklessmg.bsky.social) reply parent
Otomo could've made five movies out of what he had up to that point. He probably made the best possible one.
Mark Gilleece (@recklessmg.bsky.social) reply parent
I was quite frustrated by the ending, first time out. Only recently did I fully appreciate how smart it is, drawing the parallel between Kaneda and Tetsuo's childhood friendship, and the test subjects and Akira.
Mark Gilleece (@recklessmg.bsky.social) reply parent
That's a decent summary. I'm not sure anyone just watches it 'as a movie' anymore. Of course, it completely blew my mind at 15 years old, but I still find new things so many years later.
Mark Gilleece (@recklessmg.bsky.social) reply parent
Very keen to hear your reaction.
Mark Gilleece (@recklessmg.bsky.social) reply parent

Mark Gilleece (@recklessmg.bsky.social) reply parent
Done. I'd be interested to hear some insights on the questions about how it should be assigned. I lean towards randomly, myself, but I don't love the idea of manufactured scarcity that this suggests.
Mark Gilleece (@recklessmg.bsky.social) reply parent
He seemed to take the hint that he was stinking up his own movies for a while there... but then he turned up in Django Unchained.
Mark Gilleece (@recklessmg.bsky.social) reply parent
He needs little Nascars driving in circles around his head.
Mark Gilleece (@recklessmg.bsky.social)
Do you mind? I'm trying to cultivate a fugue state over here.
Mark Gilleece (@recklessmg.bsky.social) reply parent
Holy shit. I mean, I loved Past Lives, but now I think I have to watch everything she's done.

Oh, that's gorgeous! The Cat Amongst The Concubines.
Mark Gilleece (@recklessmg.bsky.social) reply parent
As frustrated as I was with The Boy and the Heron, I love the idea of fairweather Ghibli fans having to engage with it. I reckon the Canary People are alnost certainly Miyazaki's take on tourists in the Ghibli Museum.

One of my favourite things is listening to his commentary on the Apollo 13 DVD. He's absolutely relentless in his critiscism of every scene... until the 'vision of the moon landing' scene, and he goes very quiet. I guess that nailed that one. RIP Jim ❤️

Not to mention all the carbon the construction would permanently shit out into the atmosphere. And us being entirely dependent on other nations for the fuel (and likely the disposal, to boot).

Surrendering their deepest thoughts and emotions to a faceless corporation? Accelerating their already fragile psyches toward a digital abyss? Sure, why not. What could go wrong?
Mark Gilleece (@recklessmg.bsky.social) reply parent
So they're happy for their premium sci-fi to be comparable to those shitty fake trailers on Youtube. Got it.

This guy's adventures are really imaginative, but his character design is nothing like the movie.

Was saying this years ago. Sad to hear it's still the case. Suspect it would require a major overhaul to address, so they're not likely to do it. Pity, as it's a beautiful room, and the food and drink options are decent.

I know Spielberg's dominance of mainstream cinema has been a mixed blessing, but it's been fascinating to watch him mature and evolve as he ages.
Mark Gilleece (@recklessmg.bsky.social) reply parent
Famously, he later said fatherhood completely changed his perspective on Dreyfuss's character in Close Encounters: now he could never imagine leaving his children, even for the possibility of meeting aliens.

We could only afford to go to the cinema once a month. It was my choice that month, and I opted for Top Secret. I loved it, but my sister never forgave me.

Stunning. Perfect lines, pace and transitions. It's as good as we could ever hope for from an animated C&H.
Mark Gilleece (@recklessmg.bsky.social) reply parent
I still can't get over them including executives and agents now. And they muted the audience because they'd get so much less applause than on-screen talent.
