Agreed, but I think he's being disingenuous when he blames VFX primarily for that inflation. And I'm a fan of the man.
Even with a dataset entirely trained on existing assets, GenAI will be useless to Cameron. He pushed a VFX shot in the first movie to 96 takes. Not a live action shot, a VFX shot. Nothing I've seen of GenAI suggests an ability to iterate with that precision and specificity.

Yup. He's swinging for the fences, is old Rid. I'd argue that he's still stymied by issues he's faced throughout his career - adhd storytelling, visuals at the expense of all else - but you can't argue with the numbers. He shoots and the audience turns up.
This show has been a interval of pure joy in my week.
I think he knows he has to be seen to engage with it, but much like the Terminator sequels, I don't think he's too concerned with the outcome.
He effectively retired creatively after the first movie. I'd love to see him tackle headier material - his collaboration with Soderbergh on Solaris was fascinating - but I think these days he enjoys the process more than the finished product.

I think it was a unique moment. Otomo had boundless respect and it was the last gasp of the Bubble Era. Also, he studied the industry and knew exactly what he wanted.

Otomo could've made five movies out of what he had up to that point. He probably made the best possible one.
I was quite frustrated by the ending, first time out. Only recently did I fully appreciate how smart it is, drawing the parallel between Kaneda and Tetsuo's childhood friendship, and the test subjects and Akira.
That's a decent summary. I'm not sure anyone just watches it 'as a movie' anymore. Of course, it completely blew my mind at 15 years old, but I still find new things so many years later.
