Yeah, some authors need the room to develop a story that a novel gives them, and their short stories aren't so good. Agatha Christie is another example.

I recall a college professor of mine saying that writing a short story is harder than a novella or a novel, and it makes more sense to me as time passes. I've found more short stories I've been disappointed with than not, and it seems to come down to an individual writer's style.
