Pretty much have to assume your credit information is very much out there and just play defense. Lock and monitor at all three agencies.

Came here to say this. As a victim of the Equifax hack, my credit has been frozen for years. It's free, by law. If you've got enough tech sense to have a Bluesky account, you've got enough to manage a freeze. Do it.

dan the equifax breach actually led to an identity theft that irritatingly took years to clean up and i have never unfrozen since except for one credit check that required it

I hear you, it’s not ok. Mine got stolen two years ago and I was insanely lucky to catch it right away. But still dealing with the fallout.

If we were a serious country (and the next decade or so wasn't going to be dedicated to cleaning up The Mess), seems like coming up with a new system for SSN and financial identity data is something a politician could run on.

Freezing your credit is a good thing to do. Saved my bacon a couple of times.
