Somehow we need to build a left-leaning financial holding company that is capable of owning a successful publication that speaks truth to power... without selling itself off to be lobotomized at the first offer of big cash. A dilemma.

Yikes, Bezos owning that stable of publications? 😱
Billionaires will eventually kill everything good. We should not have billionaires.
Where’s Bloomberg and Buffet in all this?
www.theguardian.com/the-scott-tr...
It's not perfect, but it is clearly the best one left.
Thanks! Wasn't aware of that part of the Guardian's history. I've sold stories to a Conde Nast magazine. That was long ago, but it still reminds me how much better markets once were. It sickens me to think of corrupt billionaires gaining control of more and more of our media.
It's just so unhealthy for publications and news being owned by just a handful of billionaires, filtering down their hates & agendas, very worrying! I still maintain Murdoch made Brexit happen, years of negative EU stories, the damage was done way before the vote because of his poison.
It's almost like we need some left-leaning billionaires to realize that they should do more than just talk.
No. Workers should control their workplace. Doing capitalism but leftistly isn’t a thing that can work.
Couldn't you do that with workers owning shares in that holding company?
It would be better what we have no but you’d still have wealthy individuals or entities calling the shots and those people want to turn as large a profit as possible at the expense of workers and the company itself.
Someone in the replies brought up the Scott Trust, which is now an LLC- www.theguardian.com/the-scott-tr...
There is a long history of worker cooperatives and worker councils. You don’t need to over complicate it like this. Moneyed individuals are parasitic in nature and should be eliminated from the process.
Teen Vogue is currently one of the best sources of political information and analysis. I got my daughter a subscription when she was 14 (2018) because it openly discusses sex, reproduction, government, and political issues of importance to women. The notion that it will become part of Amazon is sad.
If he buys the New Yorker, I will have to unsubscribe forever. E.B. White will be turning in his grave. Sad news.
Man that pisses me off. Wired has been so good lately.
🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮
Maybe his ex might fund it?
We have one publication, flying the flag for speaking truth to power. @bylinetimes.bsky.social and this weekend, they're hosting the @bylinefestival.bsky.social. Incredibly interesting discusssions already around media ownership, influence and billionaire money in politics.
In fact, the fearless (I'm sure she won't agree but she stood up to the most toxic far right money in the world, #ArronBanks et al) @carolecadwalla.bsky.social is chatting with the tenacious @carolvorders.bsky.social tomorrow. There is hope..... #truthtopower #fealessjournalism #freespeach
If he buys them, we immediately start epic boycott of them all
Finally Melania will get her dream of being on vogue cover 🤮
The problem is that these massive tech giants are using monopoly profits to buy up the rest of the world. They need to be broken up or taxed into submission.
It's almost like there needs to be some law or something that prevents very rich people from controlling all of the media.
Not content then with destroying WaPo?
Apparently not!
Does The Guardian/Scott Trust count as "left-leaning" these days?
I think so. At least you have to hope so, otherwise you might as well give up and assume that everything is defeated and there is no point doing anything anywhere.
👍 They're one of the larger organizations I feel genuinely good about supporting every month. Would also be interesting to see a Mondragon-style media organization emerge, if someone could figure out a way to compete with the deep pockets buying influence.
I had a look at the world according to the Daily Express. I felt grubby afterwards. Viz has better journalistic standards.
Where's Soros when you actually need him
Surely Warren Buffet has some time on his hands now... 😅
Arse Technica…
It’ll implode just like Twitter
It won’t happen. There aren’t enough benevolent millionaires let alone billionaires. The left wing rich don’t invest in this shit unlike the right who do it for maximum ROI - they buy the information sources to control of the narrative. Thats how they generally wield power against governments.
It exists and it's called Bust. bust.com?ref=killyour...
I find it very hard to understand how so much of the wealthy creative talent in America seems beholden to corporate ownership. It is possible to form companies with healthier structures and still 'make bucks', so why aren't the (assumed left-leaning) creative big guns going for it?
This is a problem across the whole creative industry right now - I'm just surprised how compliant so many people who've made successful careers out of it are.
I mean, we could make a crowd-sourced non-profit with backing from everyone BUT financial institutions. Oh, didn't they try that with NPR?
In the UK, that was essentially the big idea behind the BBC! (and a reason why the Tories spent so many years trying to down-size and defund it)
No Helping homeless …no helping people starving.. there is enough money on this planet no one should be needing for anything!!! you can’t take it with you!! and you sure as 🤬 can’t buy another life!!!
I agree, but it's amazing how difficult it is to get a group of even well-intentioned people to agree, even the basics. Our village community owned greengrocers is a nightmare to organise!
Have you seen the emerging trend of non profit news organizations started by journalists so they can maintain journalistic freedom and hold power to account? We have a great one here in Richmond, VA.
Guess Bezos wants to ruin more publications if he follows through with this acquisition.
I bet someone like Mark Cuban could swing that.
Cuban is a dick
She definitely needs some fashion advice.
Besos honeymoon was cut short when his wife's face and tits melted in the Italian sun.
