My dad told me a story about having a drink with Mr Lovell at some local dive bar when this sequence was being filmed for The Man who Fell to Earth back in the 1970's. My dad said Mr. Lovell had a lot to say about space and what he saw there... I'll leave it at that. Rest in peace, spaceman.

My mom used to work for him. I think it was a natural gas facility, but can't remember that, but she was saddened to hear of his passing She always talked about him, and how great of a boss he was, and how brilliant he was, too
Weird synchronicity, but our public broadcaster here in Oz recently put the Man Who Fell To Earth up on its streaming service. Randomly, decided to check it out. The next day, the news hit the wires of Jim's death. Spooky. The scene with him is great. (Your dad 'aint bad either)
I find that kind of stuff happens a lot. For me, especially prior to the loss of musicians. Sometimes I wonder if its because their passing is imminent but not public yet, and someone along the line amps it up.

O.K. here's some weirdness... After making my previous comment on this post I headed out to the grocery store and I was thinking about how the first Bowie song I clued into was Ashes to Ashes (appropriate) and now here in the store they're playing Ashes to Ashes. Good weirdness.

Lovell, and Frank Borman who dies a couple of years ago were the thread who ran through the space program. When something big happened they were there.
As business reporter/editor in Birmingham, Alabama, I once had opportunity to meet Wally Schirra. Circa 2003. I was star-struck. The *only* time I broke “The Rules” and asked for an autograph. He obliged. I subsequently lost said autograph during job change desk clean out.
At same event I also met Civil Rights legend Fred Shuttlesworth. Again, star-struck into wide-eyed doofus child. I am sure both men saw that look quite a lot in life. RIP to them and Lovell.

It may have helped that I recognized him (he came into a bookstore where I worked), but was truly polite and took time to listen and talk a bit. Certainly met my expectations of what I expected an Astronaut to be.

My Dad worked in aerospace as a design engineer. He worked on every mission until he retired, so our house was dominated by space discussions & things that filtered down through the ranks when the astronauts came back. I’m very glad your Dad got to meet someone who’d actually lived the experience. ❤️

Did he consider writing a memoir? To me, he is the most interesting person in music. (I was captivated by age 11). He met so many people and worked with such a range of musicians and actors. The fascinating anecdotes he could tell!!!
