I've always wondered why "Donkey Kong". Was it a mispelling of Monkey. Or was it something else?

Yes but it's not really a mistranslation. Donkey as an insult means for stupid. I think Kong was the mistranslation where they thought King meant monkey because of King Kong. They were literally going for Stupid Monkey.

I think everyone gets that Kong means big ape, but does anyone really get at first read that Donkey means stupid? But I also think it's the perfect name regardless.
