Back ing the 80s dems controlled more statehouse, and in many cases, they too gerrymander. But they didn't have the tools that are used now

Right but the new large s t ate house majority for repubs in from the 2010 elections allowed them to use the upgrade tech to redraw maps, which they did. Suddenly a lot of repub seats were only vulnerable to a more conservative repub, enter the tea party and then trump

Well it laid the groundwork. Also the repubs in TX did this in 2003 with similar results. And of course since the the SC has throw in the towel and said this is a political issue, we arent going to do anything
