I respect you, but that's a swing and a miss. You can like and agree with something he does without sweeping his shortcomings under the rug. That's not purity testing, that's accountability.

Accountability and purity tests are different. You can hold someone accountable but if you torpedo the person that's potentially who stands between us and police state fascism, writing that person off because of a disagreement on a few issues is classic throw the baby out with the bathwater.

I understand your concern, but Newsom isn't being voted out for some time still, and you can both pressure him to continue the fight against authoritarianism *and* pressure him to take a better stance on supporting trans kids and helping the homeless.

I don't disagree. One can do both. But that's still not purity testing to me. That's accountability. With purism I'm talking about candidates or elected officials who are summarily dismissed outright because of a single stance, especially when them in place can move the needle to a better place.

The problem is selling that to people who A: are directly affected by the single issue, making their personal outcomes terrible either way, and B: have seen that issue be a canary in the coalmine for other issues and C: have never seen the needle move, no matter the compromise.

Is there any way to hold politicians accountable without being accused of torpedoing them? People (including Harris herself) accused uncommitted of being pro-Trump because uncommitted tried to hold politicians accountable for the genocide they were financing.
