I think they've done different trailers and posters targeting different demos so WB must be worried about its commercial prospects. It's going to be a divisive movie but since Inherent Vice was my favorite movie of its year, I'm looking forward to it.
Yeah, I love Inherent Vice. It's probably my favourite PTA. Weirdly, the book is very much like a follow-up to IV (despite being written first), so I'm really looking forward to this. I'm actually glad it's only a loose adaptation, though - the book was a bit unfocused.
PTA said in the only interview until now he took parts of VINELAND he was interested in, stole, ran and made the adaptations necessary.
So, my theory is: warner is selling as a normal action movie for the opening to be "as big as can be". I say that because for months people inside warner said they have no clue what to do with this movie. I think warner called PTA and said: look man we need to sell this move as most "conventional"
...as we can. If you do this for us, the next movie you can do whatever you want " Therefore, the movie is being sold as an action movie, BUT people said it is as PTAndersonesque as can be.
