I think it comes down to Britain being a coloniser, ergo all the good food Must be Stolen, whereas the US was a colony, so all good food was brought by choice.

Same director! And the same problem, to be honest. Danny Boyle's directing style tends to undercut any sense of intensity.

Sorry everyone, that was me. I got so excited by the rumors I decided to stay up late and order 400% of my usual amount of pizza.

Yeah, it's pretty great. I'd recommend the others in Polanski's 'Apartment Trilogy' (Repulsion and The Tenant) if you've not already seen them.

The family and friends are all just out of frame, laughing too.

Lol, fascinating typo. All letters off by one key, but all in different directions!

It's #LetterboxdFriday - here's my #LastFourWatched Strong week. The Amateur is pretty serviceable fluff, but I rewatched 'Us' and checked out some great sci-fi flicks that had somehow passed me by.

Right? Everyone is saying "oh she's going to divorce him" and it's like, yes! he acknowledged that in the post!

Embarrasingly, it was probably Fight Club.
Bryan Andrews (@bryandrews.bsky.social) reply parent
Yeah, I love Inherent Vice. It's probably my favourite PTA. Weirdly, the book is very much like a follow-up to IV (despite being written first), so I'm really looking forward to this. I'm actually glad it's only a loose adaptation, though - the book was a bit unfocused.

Bryan Andrews (@bryandrews.bsky.social) reply parent
Probably. I'd guess they're expecting massive defeats in local elections and hoping a change in leadership will reverse their fortunes. I sometimes wonder if Cleverly's exit from the leadership race wasn't mis-judged tactical voting, but instead a kind of 'New Coke' type ploy.

I mentioned breakfast because you're right - it is the biggest challenge. When your hotel offers cooked breakfast foods it's often hard to resist and stick to cereal/fruit.
Bryan Andrews (@bryandrews.bsky.social) reply parent
I find it helps to keep low-dose sleeping pills next to the bed in case I wake up in the middle of the night. Also, don't forget the dietary aspect - try to eat similar sorts of foods (and quantities!) at breakfast and dinner as you would back home.

Bryan Andrews (@bryandrews.bsky.social) reply parent
Didn't you say that production companies with experience in working with child actors bid for this, but were turned down in favour of the 'prestige bid.' So it seems like it's not even trying to appeal to kids.
Bryan Andrews (@bryandrews.bsky.social) reply parent
I don't think this guy is dragging you for engaging in discourse, just saying that kids are less likely to be put off by the whole JKR thing. But yeah, it seems like they'd get bored of this.
Bryan Andrews (@bryandrews.bsky.social) reply parent
Yeah, it feels like they're really trying to thread the needle here. Maybe they're hoping those people will continue to hate watch it. Or, they've been trawling all the 'what the films got wrong' lists for things they can correct to throw the weirdoes some tidbits.
Bryan Andrews (@bryandrews.bsky.social) reply parent
It's clearly aimed at adult fans of the books and movie series. People who still make it a big part of their personality. You know...losers.
Bryan Andrews (@bryandrews.bsky.social) reply parent
I love this film. The black and white version ('Vision in Darkness and Light') is worth a watch too. It's included under the special features on Disney+ in the UK - not sure if it's on Hulu or something elsewhere.
Bryan Andrews (@bryandrews.bsky.social) reply parent
Such a good film. The editing by Sarah Flack is incredibly tight. You see Soderbergh learned a lot from her when you watch Solaris.
Bryan Andrews (@bryandrews.bsky.social) reply parent
Fun fact - all of her book titles have two syllables, so you can sing her name followed by any of her book titles to the tune of 'teenage mutant ninja turtles.'

It's #LetterboxdFriday 📽️! Here's My #LastFourWatched 28 Years Later, which I enjoyed despite generally disliking Boyle's work; a Coen brothers classic that didn't quite live up to the hype; Nicolas Winding Refn's interesting, incomplete netflix show; and Lanthimos's elliptical oddity.
