Plenty of trades pay well though. Plumbers, mechanics, electricians and welders generally do better than service jobs or low level corporate jobs. Less vulnerable to being downsized or outsourced too.

Trades do, if a union member, pay well. Do you really think all construction workers, painters, hair stylists are making $50+ an hour. Because I am thinking most people in a service industry are scraping by. Those union jobs just aren't what is happening today.
