We should always strive to make better use of government funds. But these decisions are not easy, they require thoughtful consideration and analysis, and it can take time to build political consensus.
Gnat on the Wall (@travelgnat.bsky.social) reply parent
As a result, we donāt make spending decisions based solely on cost benefit analysis. Members of Congress push specific programs or policies because it benefits their district. They may not want to consolidate a function if it would move it an agency under someone elseās committee and budget.
Gnat on the Wall (@travelgnat.bsky.social) reply parent
Think of it this way- almost all federal spending creates jobs or pays benefits to people and someoneās congressional district. Members of Congress aspire to leadership positions on powerful committees were they can have more say in decisions.
Gnat on the Wall (@travelgnat.bsky.social) reply parent
I donāt think so. They really havenāt tried to do anything serious about fraud, waste, or abuse. The problem is that the government already spends a lot of time looking for these things. But itās hard. And a lot of waste is hidden in programs that have powerful advocates.

Critical to any audit that yields accurate findings is auditors taking the time to understand what theyāre auditing. They spend a lot of time reviewing documents, processes, policies, contracts, etc. And they confirm that understanding before they finalize their findings. DOGE did none of this.
Gnat on the Wall (@travelgnat.bsky.social) reply parent
Iāve been audited and Iāve conducted audit of contractors- and itās been obvious from the first that this was not an audit. When you do an audit, you first have to identify the question or focus of the audit. You identify what data you need which includes documents, but also interviews.
