It was not a “press conference,” just Trump rambling and Putin reading a speech, so nobody could ask the two key questions about this odd alternate history by Putin of his war. To Putin: You invaded Ukraine because the U.S. refused in 2022 to do exactly what? And Trump: Would you have done that?
Trump: What a nasty question. Vladimir, how do you do it? You don’t get asked such stupid, nasty questions back in Russia, do you? Putin: (smirks) Trump: They get a chance to ask us a question—we don’t have to let them but we do—and they ask such a dumb, nasty one. Putin: (smirk smirkens)
Of course any narrative that the attack could have been prevented but for actions that others didn't take is a fiction sadly entertained by the news media and commentariat. It's just territorial aggression by an aging megalomaniac whose extreme authoritarianism led to his own isolation.
