I don't understand how it's even possible. aren't pretty much all families double income these days?

Yep. It’s definitely a status thing in our town for sure… not many jalopies in the car pick up line

I had 2 working immigrant parents who never learned to drive. We didn’t own a car til my sister got her license and that was used primarily to ferry heavy groceries. “You hev legs donchu? You wawk!!” But we were blessed with pavements and crossings in suburban Melbourne in the 70s unlike the US now

Not sure if it’s a lot of work from home folks taking advantage of a flexible schedule or what but the line to pick up starts at least 30 minutes before school lets out… it’s insane

There are also still a fair number of stay-at-home parents out there. I would not be surprised if there are more in places like Tennessee where housing prices are a bit lower, too.

Yeah I think COVID/teleconferencing has weirdly enabled a lot of this by making schedules flexible and letting people take meetings from their car

You can employ part-time nannies who cover this period between school letting out and the parents getting home.
