The difference between dumb and smart dogs is also striking, some dogs have only one brain cell full of good will to all creatures and others could file your taxes if they had thumbs.

Like my childhood dog was more of a legally competent adult than many humans I’ve known but Violet certainly is not.

It's like why they can't have fully bear-proof garbage cans at national parks -- there's a significant overlap between the smartest bears and the dumbest tourists.

Growing up, my family had golden retrievers, which we referred to as "spuds," so I appreciate the large potato category.

I have had a smart dog. I have had a lovely but very very dumb dog. And now we have a potato.

My last dog would give up and lie down and cry if you covered her with a towel, no idea how to escape, but sweet as could be. Current dog is like a preverbal toddler, clearly communicates, follows complex directions, and can open every door in the house. Same breed but feel like different species.
