Like, this knucklehead says it's not special "when separated from those stories it's been used in and the quality of the animation." Pretty big caveats there! "the image on the left sucks when you forget that it's magical"

Won't tell you the image on the right sucks - it's technically impressive. But adding detail trade's away the image's cartoon-ness - it's innate ability to convince the viewer of it's soul. Which image provokes more emotion is always the relevant question for art.
If the image on the right looks good, it's because there is an immaculate character design crafted by a master, the lattice the other image is draped over.
This is what drives me nuts about all these "animated remakes" where they talk about how long it took to "make." You applied a filter to something someone already created. it's like Columbus claiming he discovered America.
And it's impossible to ignore that the "inferior" authentic image - Princess Mononoke, standing proud, with a look of defiance, is considered inferior to the submissive looking girl, crouching with her legs open, warmly looking at the viewer. AI's logical conclusion is feeding everyone pornography.
