People tend to look for an evil plan or conspiracy theory that explains everything, but more often than not, it's just bad decisions, incompetence and hubris.

... own boot laces and became Foreign Secretary. Then, in an act of bumbling idiocy, he slipped on a banana skin and landed in No. 10. I don't like conspiracy theories. But I don't much like a series of accidents, bad moves and incompetence that all head inexorably in the same direction either.
