Everyone has played with a guy like Martinelli. A gifted player, superb dribbler, who'll never pass the ball and tries to carry it behind the goal line. Great if it works, a massive waste if it doesn't.

People tend to look for an evil plan or conspiracy theory that explains everything, but more often than not, it's just bad decisions, incompetence and hubris.

This article, for example. The author makes a few interesting points in the beginning, but then comes to the conclusion that 'stopping the boats' must be Starmer's top priority. bsky.app/profile/fina...
DepressedClown (@lizardunicorn.bsky.social) reply parent
Starmer is a putative multi-millionaire who co-founded a successful law firm. I doubt he's in it for the pension plan. Just read what Blairites and other arch-centrists are saying, as those are probably the people he listens to. It's all like 'he must stop the boats and be tough on migration'.

Starmer and his team probably think they can claw voters back from Reform by acting like a more competent, managerial version of Farage.
DepressedClown (@lizardunicorn.bsky.social) reply parent
Nah, it's incompetence. They never had a mission, apart from crushing the Labour left. Now that's done, it reveals an intellectual wasteland at the core of the Starmer project.

Seems like Starmer wants more Treasury brain round the table: 'York-Smith is an experienced Treasury official, who has led economic strategy for six chancellors and oversees tax and welfare at the Treasury.' www.theguardian.com/politics/202...
DepressedClown (@lizardunicorn.bsky.social) reply parent
I don't think this is a viable strategy; on the contrary. Economic analysis and fact-checking have little to no impact on Reform voters as political persuasion in right-wing populism is emotional rather than factual. They love Reform and Brexit as they are anti-immigration. Facts don't matter.

It's simple, if you throw paint on a plane then you get proscribed and any 80 year olds defending you get arrested. If you ask people to burn down hotels, and they try, you get an interview in the Telegraph and positive coverage in the BBC. That's sensible, proportionate policing.
DepressedClown (@lizardunicorn.bsky.social)
It's impossible. Sun, Times, Mail, Telegraph & Spectator have decided to support Reform and they are setting the agenda for the rest. It's emotional topic, borderline conspiratorial, and so far, Labour have no idea how to deal with it.
