New question for the class: what are your favorite appearances by a musical artist in a film or TV show? Playing live, acting role, whatever. Whaddya got?
New question for the class: what are your favorite appearances by a musical artist in a film or TV show? Playing live, acting role, whatever. Whaddya got?
This really blew up in an unexpected manner. But so far I have not seen anyone mention some of my faves: The Rave-Ups in PRETTY IN PINK and BEVERLY HILLS 90210 Powermad in WILD AT HEART Young MC and Cut Chemist in UP IN THE AIR Bobby Short and The 39 Steps in HANNAH AND HER SISTERS
did anybody say Yo La Tengo as Bobby Knight Ranger on Parks & Rec
Blue Rodeo in Postcards from the Edge
Fukuyama Masaharu may not count since he's basically had parallel careers in music and acting, but the film The Third Murder is powerful and haunting (as is his performance) and the TV series Galileo is good fun
youtu.be/zP9sbSPVC2c?...
He's got so many good ones. Love his Nikola Tesla in The Prestige
He was brilliant as Andy Warhol in Basquiat
Umm... Bowie as Goblin King Jareth in Labyrinth.
It is the David Bowie Rule of movies. If David Bowie is in the movie, the movie is worth watching.
Also good in Into the Night
Yes.
The long lost Philip Jeffries in Fire Walk With Me
If I had to pick one, Merry Christmas Mr. Lawrence. It's a lead role that demands real acting chops, and he has to play a guy who can't sing, terrible, voice like animals dying.
Tremendous role. And his antagonist is played by Ryuichi Sakamoto, who also did the soundtrack
The extremely sinister agent in Into the Night. "Oh, you are good."
Perfect casting
This is the one. He just stood there looking amazing with that shark fin.
Wait. What? WOW💜💫
In 2010, thepublished an article about Nikola Tesla and how tech firms were idolizing him. In the article they discuss The Prestige as an example of his cultural relevancy, and so they used the David Bowie portrayal for the article hedcut. Instead of Tesla himself. archive.ph/pu5ed
Yes! That's a good one!
Yes!
Alice Cooper Group - Diary of a Mad Housewife Doug MacMillian (Connells) - Bandwagon Robyn Hitchcock - The Manchurian Candidate Joe Strummer - Straight to Hell
How bout Rollins as a computer nerd named fucking SPIDER in Johnny Mnemonic
Aimee Mann in The Big Lebowski
The Doobie Brothers on What’s Happening. I’m old enough to have seen it when it aired.
I’ll just talk to whichever Doobie do be there
Dee, to Tiran Porter: You must be a half-brother.
Which Doobie you be?
RIP, Dee.
I think a lot about how wrong the "don't tape shows" message of that episode was. From so many different angles, even the interests of the record companies themselves!
Me too. I still use Dwayne’s line…which nobody understands.
SAME! Loved that show.
James Darren on Deep Space Nine.
Tom Waits, Down By Law youtu.be/xxGO3952aqI?...
Either between Bowie in Labyrinth or Bernadette Peters in Animaniacs.
Easily Flea from Red Hot Chili Peppers as one of nihilists in The Big Lebowski the breaks into The Dude’s apartment at the beginning of the film
How did I not know that was Flea?! Now I can't unsee it. Thank you! 👍
Or Flea and Kiedis as the Monster Truck vigilantes in "The Chase"
Or Flea as "Needles" in Back to the Future 2 and 3?
Bowie in fire walk with me, flaming lips in charmed, Rza in ghost dog, TI in American gangster.
Tom waits in anything, Iggy pop in Pete and Pete.
Sam Phillips as Katya in "Die Hard With A Vengeance". She also did a cameo in Wim Wender's "The End of Violence" but I can't find any screenshots.
Dwight Yoakim in like everything he's done. Logan Lucky for sure.
Yoakam damnit.
*swoon* youtu.be/eijz1hSj9u0?...
Sting in Quadrophenia
has anyone said BOTH Cypress Hill and Naughty by Nature in the 1993 superhero movie The Meteor Man?
Marshall Crenshaw showing up as a meter reader in The Adventures of Pete & Pete. That show also features appearances from Michael Stipe and Iggy Pop.

Bob Dylan on Dharma and Greg.
Tom Petty in The Postman.
Vic Chesnutt in small role...
10/10
This gorgeous specimen - Kris Kristofferson in “Alice Doesn’t Live Here Anymore” (and everything else he was in in the 70’s).
Fuck yeah...😘
Kristofferson was really good. He was terrifying in LONE STAR (1996)!
Queen Latifah in Chicago
Does Steve van Zandt count? 🤔 I mean, he got the lead role in a TV series.
The lead?
Yes, as ex mafia boss Frank Tagliano en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lilyham...
I somehow was not aware of that. I thought you might have been referring to his role as Silvio on The Sopranos.
Similar roles, but different series. I saw a couple of episodes from Lilyhammer on French / German TV arte. But with subtitles - I hate them.
Wu Tang on Larry Sanders
dipshit with a 9-toed woman...
I liked her Buffy cameo better
Man, I hate playing vampire towns
Pretty much everybody who played at the Roadhouse in Twin Peaks but especially the Chromatics, Eddie Vedder and “The” Nine Inch Nails.
Huey Lewis and the news in the blacklist, Season 8, Episode 6, titled "The Wellstone Agency,"
Tom Waits in "The Imaginarium Of Doctor Parnassus." He's brilliant as the devil.
Has to be Dexter Gordon in Round Midnight
Meatloaf in The Rocky Horror Picture Show.
and in The Pick of Destiny
Everybody in Woodstock.
Elvis Costello filling in for David Letterman when he had his heart surgery.
Tom Petty on The Larry Sanders Show. (Ditto Elvis Costello)
Art Garfunkel in Carnal Knowledge. Paul Simon in Annie Hall.
Roger Daltrey vacuuming in The Mighty Boosh.
Steve Earle was great in The Wire.
Well, so Bowie had a big acting career, but I loved him in Zoolander.
Elvis Costello in Spice World.
The singer Sam Phillips as a German killing machine in Die Hard with a Vengeance. Incredible. www.instagram.com/reel/C5JxtZO...
Janelle Monáe in Moonlight holds up against all the others I can think of
ngl I cracked a BIG smile when she appeared on screen in Knives Out 2! We loved the first one so we went into 2 sight unseen: no trailers, no ads, no idea who was in it or what it was about. She ROCKED! 👍💙🦋💙💪
Janelle Monae in anything.
Somebody probably already said this but John Doe from X is a really good character actor.
Tom Petty as Tom Petty, the mayor of a band of survivors in The Postman
Prince in New Girl
Underrated episode!
Neek Reevers!
I always enjoyed it when Mel Tormé showed up on Night Court. What? I'm old.
How about Cyndi Lauper in Mad About You? "Wanna wear my tiara? It's bejeweled!" (Shout out to @joeartguy.bsky.social )
I just watched that
Does it count if the the singer was already also an actor (and they're playing a singer)? If so, don't know about favorite, but James Darren comes to mind playing Vic Fontaine on Deep Space Nice, especially the episode "It's Only a Paper Moon".
You got that right, Pallie
ALL NIGHT LONG coming to a complete halt so Dave Brubeck and friends can cook for five minutes.
now I have to find this movie
on Criterion and Tubi that I’m aware of
Brubeck jamming with Mingus no less.
Sting in Stormy Monday… maybe his best performance until The Only Murders in the Building
Can Calloway in the Blues Brothers, with his Minnie the Moocher at the climax
Yes, and Aretha Franklin, and John Lee Hooker, and Ray Charles, and hell, THE BAND that included Matt "Guitar" Murphy, Steve Crocker, and Lou Morini. I got another: Chuck Mangione (RIP, quite recently) in the original run of 'King of the Hill.'
All of the Seattle bands featured in Singles
I was going to say that too, an absolutely cracking film
God I miss him.
Hyde in Last Quarter. https://youtu.be/jXhXXrTgndM?si=n0a-6wn4QO9PSqT6
Jack White in Cold Mountain
All my favourites have been mentioned but a special mention of a funny, out of character cameo by Marilyn Manson in Wrong Cops.
youtu.be/Uty1QGRAQes?...
Or frikkin "Runaway"! He was so creepy.
Lyle Lovett was great in Robert Altman's "Short Cuts." Huey Lewis and Tom Waits were quite good in the film too.
Sting in The Adventures of Baron Munchausen Phil Collins in Hook
And Buddy Rich on The Muppet Show
www.youtube.com/watch?v=Creh... London Wainwright III was in a few episodes of M*A*S*H

Levon Helm as Loretta Lynn's father in Coal Miner's Daughter

Love anytime David Bowie shows up in cinema
Justin Hawkins of The Darkness made a pretty good Screaming Lord Sutch in Nick Moran's 2009 Joe Meek biopic 'Telstar'.
👏👏👏👏👏
Alanis Morrisette as god
I can't stand her singing but yes, that was brilliant.
Eddie Vedder in Singles
Eddie Vedder in Walk Hard.
not a great movie, but a superb cameo
It’s literally the only thing I can even remember from it.
Donna Lewis performing “I Love You Always Forever” at the Peach Pit After Dark
I vaguely remember The Flaming Lips being involved in 90210 Peach Pit activity (or maybe it was just the song "She Don't Use Jelly"), and also the kidvid show 'Yo Gabba Gabba.'
Dwight Yoakam any time Dwight Yoakam pops up. Couldn’t name a single Dwight Yoakam song, but I love it whenever Dwight Yoakam pops up on the screen. Dwight Yoakam
He was great in Sling Blade.
The Men at Work guy playing ‘Overkill’ while he follows the Scrubs guy like a fever dream.
Colin Hay. This is one of mine.
I loved this. I was looking and thought, is that Colin Hay? Nah, can’t be. Wait, yeah it is!!
@alyankovic.bsky.social in all the Naked Gun movies
Frank Sinatra in Manchurian Candidate
This is my pick 100%
How did I never know this??
Come on, Tom Waits in Down By Law! And given Jarmusch, add Screaming Jay Hawkins in Mystery Train.
I’m sure you remember The Blues Brothers
And as that gold digger in Bister Scruggs
Dean Martin and Sammy Davis Jr in Cannonball Run. “They're doing the work of the Lord. In a Ferrari, they can just do it faster.”
I can't believe nobody has Ice T in Friday.
Completely overshadowed by Ice T's performance in Tank Girl.
I can think of one big reason why.
Jagger in "Performance": he creates a more sinister, dark charismatic version of his performing self (and then felt compelled to try to live as this character for a few years after the movie)
www.youtube.com/watch?v=mLt0...
Bonus points for Kenny Wayne Shepard mowing the lawn.
Who is this?
One of the Spice Girls I believe.
The first thing i thought of.
This is the only correct answer!
Screamin' Jay Hawkins in Perdita Durango and it isn't even close
You mention Screamin' Jay you have to show Mystery Train and that red suit coat and tie.
Aretha in the Blues Brothers
She taught me that you can add syllables for emphasis: “ SHEEEIT they still owe you money, fool!”
Came here to say this
Got a giggle out of Kylie Minogue in Doctor Who.
When Anthrax rocked out on Married w children lmao youtu.be/RQty0OEsptM?...
Surprise Bowie as Tesla in The Prestige
both the movie and the cameo blew me away in the theater 👍👍
The Jon Stewart Show, in the 90's. Cancelation had already been announced. Show was chaos. A guest cuts his hand on a smashed mug (similar to how Stewart would do years later on TDS). Marilyn Manson comes out, plays Lunchbox, starts a fire on stage. I was 18 and stoned. It was glorious.
If you'd have included video games, it would have to be Wayne Newton as Mr. New Vegas.
No love for Henry Rollins?
Oh man completely forgot, he was a cop!
exactly!
We have a winner!
I really don’t know how this isn’t everyone’s pick tbh
And choreographed by Gates McFadden, aka Dr Crusher in Star Trek. An actor not appearing in a movie but doing musical shit for it.
How did I not know that?!
Fishbone’s appearance in the movie “Tapeheads”
I think you mean "Ranchbone" Love that soundtrack
Don't forget the Swanky Modes themselves, Sam Moore and Junior Walker
John Densmore in Square Pegs m.youtube.com/watch?v=zq4J...
Not a musician, but an honorable mention for Xavier McDaniel in Singles. 😂
Roy Clark on The Odd Couple.
Huey Lewis in Back to the Future, as well as ZZ Top in Back to the Future 3
OMG I never knew that was Huey Lewis!
Oh, also in the BttF trilogy, Flea.
Huey Lewis as Hailey's father on One Tree Hill
Cosmo Jarvis sells the Soulful But Shouting 1600s Englishman Abroad role so so hard in Shogun
Can we count the Wonders (aka the One-ders) as Cap'n Geech and the Shrimp Shack Shooters?
Another favourite: Tom Waits in Mystery Men
Bowie in The Linguini Incident See also: Elton John in the second Kingsmen movie
And Jeff Tweedy. And Ginuwine. And The Decembrists. And Letters the Cleo. Best episode of the series.
Ginuwine is your cousin?!?!
“Girl don’t know who Ginuwine is. That’s one of my ‘Oh No-Nos.’ Jerry’s 16th birthday. Another great episode.
oh hell yeah, that was a PERFORMANCE
Tom Waits in Licorice Pizza as well
Tom Waits in anything, really
Michael Stipe as Captain Scrummy in The Adventures of Pete and Pete. Final answer
Pete and Pete has so many to choose from. Iggy Pop, Debbie Harry, Kate Pierson, and Gordon Gano off the top of my head
youtu.be/OvMW3U-VYE0?...
I love the little handclap at the end
There so many music people in that show. Probably watching that as a kid helped craft my love for that music sound and artists.
Yus!
I think Kate Pierson (B-52s) was in that episode too.
Syd Straw leading Little Pete's band.
Scrolled down hoping to find this. Syd Straw should be bigger than Taylor Swift
Pete and Pete cameos are legendary!
Roger Daltrey in CSI.
Who?
The Who.
Sigh
There’s two things you need to know. I’m the king, and number two is lookoutman!
Huey Lewis in Back To The Future Twisted Sister in Pee Wee's Big Adventure
Sting is often entertaining.
Warning: this movie is EXTREMELY disturbing.
Sting’s prayer before supper is still with me decades later
I love Dennis Potter’s ‘Brimstone and Treacle’! It was originally a television play, still staring Denholm Elliott, though I’ve only ever seen the movie version. Definitely disturbing, and absolutely haunting. 👍
Willie Nelson in Thief.
Ain't nothing wrong with his performances in Honeysuckle Rose and Songwriter either.
A big, brand new one is the late Eddie Palmieri in HIGHEST 2 LOWEST. Long, glorious sequence that shows off his chops, his showmanship, in the ideal setting.
David Bowie in THE LAST TEMPTATION OF CHRIST youtu.be/pXGsio9H1xs?...
Levon Helm in a few roles but i’ll take Mr Rate in Shooter. www.youtube.com/watch?v=QxlN...

The BusBoys in 48 Hours
Sinatra as Angelo Maggio in ‘From Here to Eternity’.
Tie between Tommy Keene playing live in the Anthony Micheal Hall movie "Out of Bounds". Can't find a video or still of that, so here's the soundtrack listing and a clip of Siouxsie The Banshees playing. youtu.be/E5KPUGuGr6Y?... ...and...

I liked it when Aimee Mann was on Buffy
Steve Earle The Wire youtu.be/qAakzl6s7QI?...
Spinal Tap in, you know.
My choice as well. He was so good it was almost if he wandered in from another movie.
👏👏👏
The Blues Brothers introduced me to a lot of legendary artists when I was very young. Gotta give the movie credit for that. How else was I going to learn about Cab Calloway?
From when he was on Sesame Street? Pretty sure that's where I saw him first! youtu.be/esnDnIK2v1g?...
This was very much after the Blues Brothers and because of it
Iggy Pop in the DS9 episode “The Magnificent Ferengi”
This! SVZ turned out to be such a good actor that no one watching The Sopranos said "wait isn't that Springsteen's guitar player"
i have such a hard time remembering that that's little steven
I was today years old when I realized this.
And then, his real wife played his wife on the show!
I thought this would be the one almost by acclamation.
The Yardbirds in Blowout.
Alice Cooper in “Diary of a Mad Housewife”
I just watched that recently, insane scene
Kid 'n Play are in the criterion collection
That legendary Chris Farley/Paul McCartney “interview” on SNL. ❤️
Crime & The City Solution in Wings Of Desire; Danny Elfman as the devil in The Forbidden Zone; Rowland S. Howard in the vampire band in Queen Of The Damned (ok, I've only seen the part he was in, not the rest of that movie). So many others!
Oh, Arto Lindsay playing a DMV employee in Desperately Seeking Susan!
Jerry Cantrell as the copy shop employee at the beginning of Jerry Maguire was unexpected
TIL about the Howard, thank you, now I guess I need to see at least part of that movie
There's an extended deleted scene on YouTube.
Not necessarily my favorite, but I’m still amazed that Micheal Mann got Miles Davis to play a drug dealer on Miami Vice.
Fun to have Rollins in ‘Heat’, too, I always forget he’s in it
MV had AMAZING cameos. Leonard Cohen, Sheena Easton, Miles, Glenn Fry, Little Richard, Barbra Streisand, James Brown ... & those are just the musicians.
Phil Collins with bonus Emo Philips!
*pimp, not drug dealer
even spicier
They got Leonard cohen and Frank Zappa too
Frey, Nugent, Collins... The MTV Era, folks.
Collins killed it, just perfectly cast
Frey has a lot of acting credits
He’s still a dildo
He owned the Cardinals in “Jerry Maguire!”
Oh yes!!!
This has what the new version was missing
Iggy Pop in ds9's best episode

This but for her tiny bit in Star Trek 4:The Voyage Home.
Good one.
Lmao classic
This but for her role in Bill & Ted
Shit that's a good answer.
I! Am! Your singing telegram--
*BANG*
This exchange made my whole evening
Can never forget @janewiedlin.bsky.social as Jeanne d'Arc in 'Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure' either.
Are you talking about Missy Of Arc? Common mistake.
still play 'Rush Hour' from time to time
I can hear this picture.
Love picking her and not Lee Ving
I mean, you can pick Lee Ving for Streets of Fire since his actual voice is in that rather than whoever did the voice over for Clue.
youtu.be/esnDnIK2v1g?...
I have a soft spot for Courtney Love in The People vs. Larry Flynt.
She was so good!!!
Lollipop Shoppe in Angels From Hell, Violent Femmes on Sabrina the Teenage Witch, Yardbirds in Blow-Up, Menudo on Silver Spoons, Sonic Youth on the Simpsons, Rip Rig & Panic on Young Ones, everything on Pete & Pete
Homer Simpson, smiling politely.
Yaaardbirds
I loved that Plain White Ts had a recurring role in the TV show Greek after I had already been a fan of their music for a couple years by that point.
pretty much all of the cameos in Popstar
Iggy pop bathtub scene in Crybaby
Bruce Springsteen's cameo in High Fidelity never fails to make me smile.
ooh good call, wish i thought of that. it's not like anybody else is misunderstanding the assignment, lotta good posts in these replies, but props for nailing the assignment
Thanks, Boss.
Carl Perkins and David Bowie die at each other's hand (and in each other's arms) in INTO THE NIGHT. I have long maintained that brief movie appearance by Perkins was as interesting as Elvis' entire filmography.
Kenny Loggins showing up in one episode of Archer
Steve Earle in “The Wire.”
I don't know if I'd say favorite, but Coffee and Cigarettes had some weird ones
It surprised the hell out of me when Jon Bon Jovi showed up on Ally McBeal lol
He also showed up in West Wing
And Sex and the City
Midsomer Murders. Suzi Quatro (who previously played Leather Tuscadero on Happy Days) moved to the UK in real life, and appears in a 2007 MM episode as part of an old rock group appearing at a festival (spoiler: she is murdered). They use a clip of her voice in the 200th ep
And of course, parts of late Split Enz doing an ad for Australian Coke in The Coca Cola Kid (Tim Finn, who goes by the name of Philip in this, was dating Greta Scaachi at the time) www.youtube.com/watch?v=ml0T...
Anytime Tom Waits shows up on screen.

OMG Iggy Pop in Dead Man is hilarious!
Also! The Zone Walker is Carl McCoy from Fields of the Nephilim.
Doobie Brothers on “What’s Happening”. El Debarge on “The Facts of Life”. Frank Zappa in “Miami Vice”. Leon Redbone on the Alf talk show.

I LOVE that song, and ESPECIALLY his version of it.
Motorhead on "The Young Ones".
And the Damned.
He was great
I'm going Iggy Pop in Star Trek: Deep Space 9 episode 6x10 "The Magnificent Ferengi" as Yelgrun the Vorta.
I see that, and raise you Iggy Pop in John Waters' 'Cry-Baby'--a film that's a bit underrated in Waters' canon.
David Bowie in the movie Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me.
Not sure who the guy on the left is but the guy on the right can really play a piano
Suzi Quato?
Stumbled into this one.
I heard this post in Simon Pegg's voice. IYKYK
👍
Roger Daltrey in Highlander: The Series
Obviously the correct answer, but I appreciated Roland Gift as Xavier St. Cloud, and a few others as well.
David Bowie in The Man Who Fell to Earth David Bowie in Merry Christmas, Mr. Lawrence Alice Cooper in Wayne’s World Eddie Vedder in Walk Hard Talking Heads in Stop Making Sense Rebekah Del Rio in Mulholland Drive Henry Rollins and Ice-T in Johnny Mnemonic Debbie Harry in Videodrome

Tom Waits in Down By Law Reba McEntire in Tremors Yo La Tengo in The Book of Life
Reba!
The only South Park quote I regularly reference is “Disintegration is the best album ever!”
I remember when that episode first aired and I just about choked on my coffee - I absolutely loved the idea of these little kids not only knowing The Cure, and knowing Disintegration, but yelling that out. Chef's kiss. Just imagining them listening to Prayers For Rain on a Saturday afternoon :-)

Also noteworthy (but not necessarily for good reasons): LL Cool J in TOYS
Sting in DUNE (1984)
Lyle Lovett in The Opposite of Sex.
And The Player
Just saw him in The Player & he's so fantastically weird in it.
Mavis Staples & Tevin Campbell in Graffiti Bridge.
Has nobody said Billy Idol in The Wedding Singer yet?
“What are your favorite appearances by a musical artist in a film or TV show?” Not necessarily my favorite, but I appreciate seeing the flamenco guitarist Paco de Lucía (1947-2014) playing a flamenco guitarist named Paco in Carlos Saura’s backstage drama CARMEN (1983).
Lots of good ones. I’ll add Gene Simmons as an evil inventor in the grade B scifi movie Runaway.
Was scrolling to see if anyone mentioned this, since Simmons turns in a truly insane performance! 👍
It was a VAST improvement over KISS Meets The Phantom Of The Park. Gene probably could have made a living being in B grade scifi movies.
He’s a good bad guy for Rutger Hauer in WANTED: DEAD OR ALIVE too!
Hauer is someone I was thinking of with “make a living in B Movies”
Michael Stipe as the ice cream man on Pete & Pete. See also Iggy Pop as the suburban dad next door 🤣
Pete and Pete and REM are intertwined. They wanted REM to do the opening song. They couldn't afford it. My theory is that Stipe did this to say sorry. The nostalgia in P&P is the same that REM taps into.
