I guess it shouldn't be surprising that a lot of commentators and analysts in the EU/UK would rather embrace another performative round of European self-flagellation than engage with how bad the America Crisis could get

A lot of people struggling to get their heads around the possibility that Trump's posturing isn't an expression of American strength so much as an indicator of a potential implosion of the American system
Of course there is a lot that needs to be done to strengthen the EU. Especially because at this rate Europe might end up in a world where the Americans are so paralysed by domestic instability that they won't be much use to enemies or friends.
I think there’s a very good chance the American experiment ends in my lifetime and I’m a 53 year old American. Sad to say but I’m so disgusted by about 1/3 of our population, that if CA, OR, and WA split off, I couldn’t pack and move there fast enough.
Well for sure u Americans r not in trouble due to schenigens of that 1/3 of population only the rot is deeper
This is a key point. Wars are won (and lost) on logistics and economic strength (ultimately, after much blood and sacrifice). And USA economic strength isn't much more than a bitcoin / AI hype bubble. Would any European bet their future security on that?
How Europeans keep watching on and hoping it won’t all get worse is a deer in floodlights moment, but on a “historic world events”-scale. Absolutely mind boggling and infuriating.
From afar Americans look mostly asleep, complacent, or complicit. Staggering to watch.
I viewed my own protests as almost a perfunctory thing – of course I would be out there for the end of our Republic and what it stood for. Apparently this was not a view shared by the majority of people who voted the same way I did.
Yes the consequences of the (understandable) Democratic states’ rights resistance logic likely point in this direction.
🎶"States rights for me ... "And not, blue voters, for thee."🎵
A modern version of Rome's third century crisis.
You would think the federal government invading America's most iconic cities again the will of the residents would be an obvious sign?!?!?
Are you talking about Draghi? Because I did not disagree. I also don't disagree with you, btw.
Well, working principle is its not bad until its get bad. I think Americans wont react until US economy tanks (most only care abt money). So the longer it takes to tank the more messy and difficult it will be to any recovery from this mess.
Honestly a lot of American commentators and analysts have a hard time engaging with how bad the American crisis is, and will become. Part of the problem is that it’s hard to wrap your head around how the Federal government interacts with the state and local governments. I can give the EU peeps slack
I'm American, following it more than is healthy and as much as any non-professional can afford to. Obv things are getting very bad. But how bad? Will Supreme Ct assert sep of powers and federalism or not? Will military get clearly illegal orders? Will officers risk careers to resist them?
Point is I have little confidence in either of those critical questions (on both I'm 60-40 optimistic). How would anyone else know? Many Americans seem stuck in complacency. I envy their ability to compartmentalize but not their being checked out.
Supreme court! BUHAHAHA! Republicans plotted and played well to fill that organ of power in the last decade. They bent the rules not to follow them. Supreme court wont save the US
SCOTUS — no. They won’t. Military— as an institution they’re going to follow illegal and unconstitutional orders. A few soldiers and officers will obey their oath to uphold the constitution. The rest won’t because they agree with the regime or are paralyzed by fear.
They care abt salaries most do the same. America is built on money not any ideology or belief
But things will shake out differently state by state and city by city. California redistricting was not on my bingo card. Hochul looks set to follow Newsom’s example. We discover new pain points for business (Tim Apple and Intel for example) but also unseen friction between state & society. Hope.
Tbf lots of UK commentators are desperately trying to bring the American crisis home
