You are correct, as far as news goes. However, during an active fire situation, Facebook has been (in the past, I doubt that the following will work in the future), FB has been an invaluable tool to get word out into the affected community to organize resources and response.

I.e. volunteer kitchens at various evac spots, getting livestock out, getting meds to people who forgot to put them in their evac kit, arranging child care for busy firefighters, talking 80 year olds into evacuating, getting exotic phone chargers to firefighters in remote areas at 3 am ...

I'll miss the community group pages. Those were very useful for this type of stuff.

I actually saw a lot of evacuation info on TikTok and I live in Germany. All algorithms are different. I get very little weird "Diddy causes wildfires" theories becausevi block people and don't engage.

I first became aware of twitter’s potential during the Australian fires years ago. It was amazing how people would tweet in real time how conditions were. It’s really sad that is gone now. It was the best of twitter.

I keep telling people that social media should not be your source of information and we are experiencing an information hole because local networks and print media are all shuttering and have no strong foothold on social media sites. this will only get worse when the new administration comes in.
