There should be a minimum tax rate after personal exemptions (which everybody gets), much like in Canada. The same as the base tax rate. So even the super-rich with all sorts of special tax exemptions will always pay tax. It would be good to make it retroactive to 2025. No free lunch for the rich.

My parents are no longer here but I fully understand the stress and financial damage that could wreck a family if they had to care for their elderly parents at home.

How many women will have to quit their jobs if/when an elderly parents has to move in with them? What would most families do if they lost her income? ....... and that's just reality.

I took care of my mom with Parkinson's for 7 years. I was desperately looking for facility w/ a Medicaid bed when Covid hit. I worked remotely for 2 years and ran myself ragged until it wasn't safe for her or me. She passed in Nov., but I can't imagine moving her back in fully bedridden.

The tragedy is that by the time Medicaid covers your nursing home- it requires that you have already spent everything else you have on the nursing home care up to that point at which Medicaid kicks in. Your life savings gone already and now Medicaid will be gone. What will happen to you?

My mother's nursing home/ assisted living was over $110k a year. How are people going to afford this when most can't even afford to pay for food and housing? The hardship this will cause everyone is immense.

My dad's was around $500/day, and that was ten years ago. He was there about 6 months and by the end my mom was debating either divorcing him and keeping all the assets or selling off the investment portfolio he'd taken decades building, which she's now living on in addition to her Social Security.

People who have yet to experience caring for an elderly parent have no idea. Medicaid requires you to go through all of your assets/money before it will be granted. So, if you are planing to get an inheritance from your parents, don't count on it. If they require memory care the cost is astronomical

This is why my mother has been trying to unload her assets. She's done well but not so well everything wouldn't be cleaned out in a few years of care.

And so many don't realize that they look back five years, so it takes significant plan-ahead time to avoid losing the estate even if parents do pass it on while alive and not in a nursing home

Yeah. I don't know the laws here, but she's been working on this for a few years already, so I believe that is her plan. Grandson's college, house down-payments and loan payoffs for family, that sort of thing.

They will audit the last 5-8 years - because of this very reason. They know people do this.

The other point is the majority of people who are on Medicaid most likely have complex situations to deal with without having more hurdles placed in front of them. And if you think cutting over $900B isn't going to force closures, I think you're mistaken. I hope I'm wrong, but I don't think so.

1/ When my mother-in-law had to go into assisted living, she had a million dollar house, stocks, money in the bank. We had to liquidate all of it to pay for it. When she needed a nursing home, she had to be on Medicaid. There was still money left, but without Medicaid, they wouldn’t admit her.

I've been there. What's stunning is I'm sure there must be Republican Congresspeople who have had to go through this, but block any piece of legislation Democrats have ever put forward to address it. Now, Republicans have just made everything 1000x worse. There won't even be enough nursing homes.

2/ The machinations my husband and I had to perform to make a woman who was well-off and meant for her son to have a nice inheritance, destitute were heartbreaking. She died with nothing.
