When I was little, the U.S. military came to our home at gunpoint and took me and my family away. We were imprisoned for years in barbed wire camps simply because we were Japanese American. I have spent my life telling that story, hoping it would never be repeated.
But something very much like it is happening again.

People are being rounded up and crammed into a hastily constructed camp of plastic tents and cages. They are being forced to endure unlivable conditions, all because they weren’t born in this country. Most have no criminal records. All of them deserve a right to a hearing and to due process of law.
This is a human rights crisis, not a political issue. No one should be treated as disposable because of where they were born. Due process and dignity aren’t privileges they’re basic rights. We can’t stay silent about this.
I know that pain. I know what it is to be abandoned by your country. We cannot look away. We cannot be silent.

My husband’s entire family was put into those concentration camps, during WW2. We had the honor of watching our son be honored, at the Tule Lake pilgrimage, for the legal battles to preserve as much of the Tule Lake camp as possible. We also watched you speak of your own family’s incarceration.

The passage of time has resulted in people just assuming "it couldn't possibly happen again!", only, it has, and it will keep on happening so long as people are suckered into believing that rich people are their friends...
As long as we keep categorising humans into binaries like we're cattle, it will keep happening. It creates an 'us vs. them' situation which then invariably devolves into 'I'm right, you're wrong.' Then its even easier to dehumanise. Once you dehumanise, it's all over but for the band playing.

I am so sorry you went through that. We had a family friend who was married to an American GI. She was put into a camp as well. Her name was Tsuako, but everyone called her Betty. I didn't get to spend as much time with her as I wanted, but she was beautiful all the way through.

Having friends of different race helps us not to look at them as a stereotyped group. Children grew up in racially mixed school will learn to look at them as another human beings from different culture. I like the racial and cultural diversity of our country and it should be our strength.
