2/ This new rules change is just one more abdication of legislative power allowing Trump's destruction of democracy can move faster. Republicans are letting Trump seize congressional spending power; doing no oversight over his corruption.

3/ None of this is normal. If Republicans continue to view themselves as Trump's employees, instead of an independent branch charged with checking runaway executive power, the damage to our democracy will be fatal.

And they should have brought the motion to force them to show their loyalties. Manchin did give a few votes needed to get some judges in but he should have been called on to show himself and force the Dems to support a primary to him

Democrats are still trying to play by the rules the GQP no longer bother following. Rules that are in place to serve as guardrails in a functioning democracy. You can do or say what you want but when one party ignores the laws/checks and balances in place, you no longer have a democracy.

To be fair, Harry Reid (former D-Utah) opened crack in door by allowing majority vote instead of 2/3 votes for cloture on judicial nominees. McConnell warned him & did same thing on Supreme Court nominees. That’s how we got 3 Trump justices. Only good thing is future Dem Prez can now use same rules.

Stop blaming Dems for this. The Republicans would have done it anyway at some point. They will do anything to get what they want and will never reciprocate Dems' overtures of bipartisanship.

ginya1.bsky.social @ginya1.bsky.social

Not blaming Dems at all just giving historical perspective. This is called ”nuclear option” & prior to Harry Reid in 2013, it had never been used: that’s how sacred cloture (i.e. filibuster) is in Senate. Reid was desperate b/c Repubs were blocking all Obama’s judges even though Dems were majority.

Dems considered ending filibuster altogether when controlled Senate under Biden but didn’t have the votes with Manchin & Sinema plus knew if they did this they’d be handing Repubs gift if they retook Senate. Repubs have won short-term victory here but not long-term one.

the U.S. Constitution addresses the removal of treasonous politicians through the impeachment process. Article II, Section 4 specifies that the President, Vice President, and other civil officers can be impeached and removed from office for treason, bribery, or other high crimes and misdemeanors.
