A message for JD Vance and anyone else in this Administration that is pretending they care about the safety of our kids. They don’t. All they care about is the political approval and profits of the gun industry. And they show it every day.
Trump is rooting for a shutdown. He knows he has created a huge problem because now any budget deal with Republicans isn’t worth the paper it’s written on. He’s not even pretending to follow the law.
Last night @andersoncooper asked me whether we could pass any laws making our children safer. I gave him an honest answer. So long as Trump and congressional Republicans are in the pocket of the gun lobby, there's not a chance.
Give us a break. The only action you guys have taken is to weaken gun laws, allowing scores of criminals to get guns; shut down funding for anti-violence programs in our cities; close the Office of Gun Violence Prevention. You've taken action - and it's gotten people killed.
The story of the human race is a story of refusing to accept violence as ordinary and normal. But Donald Trump celebrates and uses violence - and the threat of violence - everyday. Our nation under him is bathed in violence. We are heading backwards.

7/ But the hospitals? They're bankrupt now. The patients they serve have nowhere else to go. Most private equity firms don't care about providing good health care. They care about making $$ and they're willing to devastate communities to turn a profit. We shouldn’t let them.
6/ Meanwhile, their private equity bosses were cashing out. They borrowed $457 million to give a payout to shareholders. One CEO made so much money, he owned two luxury mansions in LA just 11 minutes away from each other. Then they just divested and walked away.
5/ The nurses, doctors, and hospital staff continued providing the best care possible as Prospect starved them of resources. Some even bought supplies and food for patients out of their own pocket when Prospect refused to pay the vendors. But it was a losing battle.
4/ The impact was devastating. No doctors on overnight shifts. Basic medical supplies ran out. Ceilings were falling and elevators stopped working. More patients experienced complications. The staff were heroic in trying to patch together good care.
3/ Instead, private equity deployed the “buy, strip, flip” playbook. It’s exactly as destructive as it sounds. Buy a vulnerable hospital. Strip it of staff, services and assets - scam and squeeze every dollar possible out of patients. Flip whatever’s left for a big payout.
2/ In 2016, private equity backed Prospect Medical Holdings bought three cash-strapped hospitals in Connecticut with the promise they'd invest in upgrades. The plan was to shore up the hospitals so they could offer better care for patients. It was sold as a win-win. They lied.

The Putin-Trump meeting was a disaster, as predicted. Putin got everything he wanted: a photo op legitimizing his war crimes, no ceasefire, and no sanctions or new weapons for Ukraine. Trump's goal was to keep Putin happy. He succeeded.
Putin played Trump. He got his photo op on American soil, washing away his war criminality. He made no commitments to end the war. And he suffered zero consequences. What a day for Putin.
Trump said the goal of the summit was a ceasefire. If no ceasefire, there will be consequences for Russia. Putin gave Trump the middle finger. Said he would continue fighting and committing war crimes. Trump said ok no problem. Putin's in charge. Trump follows orders.
6/ If this meeting passes with no deal, no tough sanctions and no new major military support for Ukraine, then Trump has essentially made this his war. He has assured it will continue, and likely slowly but methodically go Putin's way. A huge moral and strategic loss for America.
5/ Is there a scenario where Ukraine can still hold up against Russia without U.S. weapons or support? Yes - underestimating Ukrainian courage is a bad bet. But let's be honest: it's not easy. And Putin knows this. Without U.S. support, Putin has NO reason to quit.
4/ Why? Because Putin would know - for sure this time - that Trump is going to allow him to win the war. Because if Putin thumbs his nose again at a peace deal, and then Trump STILL refuses to help Ukraine, then Putin knows Trump has given him the green light.
3/ How could the meeting become an even bigger disaster? Easy. If there is no ceasefire (and there can't be, because Ukraine isn't even attending!), and Trump doesn't immediately announce sanctions AND new weapons for Ukraine. That would be Putin playing Trump like a fiddle.
2/ This meeting essentially accepts Russia back into the club of legitimate major nations. And that's unacceptable, because Putin is committing war crimes in Ukraine - purposely murdering innocent people and kidnapping young children. The photo op alone is a disaster for peace.
There is no scenario today in which Putin doesn't become stronger and America becomes weaker. It's a premade disaster. 1/ But it could be worse than just a bad photo op. Here's how:

It's important you notice what Trump's Treasury Secretary said the other day. He slipped and admitted that the new Trump accounts - with a measly $1,000 per person - are "backdoor for privatizing Social Security." He actually said that. I need to explain to you what it means.
The economy sucks because Trump is badly mismanaging it. But soon his propaganda operation will erase the truth about our economy and replace it with lies. It's hard to underscore how dangerous this moment is - when truth disappears. Stop pretending it's normal.
The CDC shooting is just one in a line of attacks by right wing radicals fueled by hate talk from President Trump and his allies. They fill up dangerous people with anger and lies (like the COVID vaccine is "poison") and then arm them with military weapons. A toxic combination.
Let's be totally clear. Trump's decision to take over the DC police isn't about public safety. The most violent cities are in Republican states - and there's no takeover happening there. This is just another attempt to distract from Trump's corruption and suppress dissent.
Trump didn’t just pardon all the January 6 rioters. He hired one - who yelled for rioters to kill police officers he called Nazis - as a top Department of Justice official. Just outrageous. We are increasingly becoming a banana republic with no law.
Democracies die when the regime ignores the norms and operates outside the box, while the opposition respects norms and stays inside the box. If Republicans redraw congressional districts in states they control, then Democrats need to do the same in states we control. NO DOUBT.
My optimism about our ability to save our democracy comes from my experience. No matter how broken or bruised our democracy is today, I have seen it work and I know it can work again. I have seen the power of collective action. I know it can save us now.

We need to be talking to Trump voters who thought he was going to upend the status quo, and show them how he is just protecting the powerful, corrupt, and lawless. “He lied to you,” we need to tell them. “And so it’s ok for you to walk away.”
With a few days distance from this event, it reeks even worse. If government data just becomes propaganda and the leader gets to make up whatever numbers he wants, it becomes impossible for a democracy to function. This is not a small moment.

Senate Republicans tried to bully Democrats into expediting nominations to fill out positions in their increasingly authoritarian state. They failed.
6/ Of course big donors have always had access to politicians. But the scope and sophistication of this access operation is unprecedented. And NEVER before has a President openly made money personally off selling access like this. We shouldn't accept any of it.
5/ His family gets in on the grift too. His son is opening a new private club in DC - with a $500,000 entry fee. Donald Jr. markets it as the place to meet with his father's Cabinet. They don't even hide the access game, naming it "The Executive Branch".
4/ Trump also sells access to him for those who send money directly to Trump's wallet. This spring, he held a reception with the top buyers of his crypto coin. News of the opportunity immediately drove up the price of the coin, making Trump millions.
3/ One crypto CEO who paid the $1 million price explained to the @nytimes that after his meeting with Trump, his idea to make money off the federal government was suddenly "making the rounds...so mission accomplished from my view.”
2/ The primary way to get to Trump is at his golf clubs. Reportedly, a $5 million donation to Trump's political operation gets you a one-on-one meeting. $1 million will get you a group private dinner. Putting a price on a one-on-one meeting isn't normal.
The story of how Trump sells access to the White House - to benefit himself and his family financially and to benefit his political operation - is shocking and sordid. No President has ever monetized access like Trump has. 1/ It's a story you need to know.

Unsurprising bad jobs report. Just 73,000 added in July, and most of those were health care. Even worse, May and June jobs numbers revised down by 258,000. Awful. Companies don't want to create jobs in Trump's chaos economy with weakening rule of law and rampant corruption.
Update: I offered this simple amendment in the Appropriations Committee to say no President can withhold funds from a college to try to control their speech. Failed 14-15. Every Republican voted to endorse Trump’s censorship.
Ok I’m offering another amendment right now in the Appropriations Committee to stop Trump’s corruption. This one says the Department of Education can’t cancel funding for a college just because professors or students hold views Trump doesn’t like. Again, stay tuned.

The fight against corruption has to be ceaseless. Today in the Appropriations Committee, I will offer an amendment to prohibit the Qatari jet that was gifted to Trump (which is going to cost taxpayers $1 billion) from being transferred to him personally. Stay tuned.
To them every part of government - even Social Security - is just a source of enrichment for their billionaire friends. "Privatizing" Social Security is just about getting Wall Street a bunch of fees to manage money.

6/ It could be that parts of the deal Trump "announced" eventually become formalized. But his big win for the U.S. - a $550 billion Japanese "signing bonus" to America - looks like fiction. Trump just made it up. But he got big headlines and Japan's denial got no headlines.
5/ Further, Trump's 70 minute negotiation was with a desperate lame duck Japanese government that just lost control of the parliament. It's not even clear Prime Minister Ishiba will be around the write the text of the agreement that doesn't exist.
4/ Unsurprisingly, Japan immediately confirmed there is no 90/10 deal and no formal deal at all. AND if there ever is one, then just like any other investment deal, the U.S. and Japan will split returns based on each country's contributions.
3/ The press reported it straight even though it sounded absurd. $550 billion is 13% of Japan's entire GDP! Who believes Japan is investing 13% of its GDP in the U.S. and giving the U.S. 90% of the profits? It made no sense. And of course we find out - Trump made it up.
2/ The most significant claim Trump made in the "announcement" was a $550 billion Japanese investment fund in the U.S. where the U.S. would split profits with Japan 90/10. Trump called it a "signing bonus". "They gave us $550B up front, 100 percent," he said.
The more we learn about the U.S.-Japan "trade deal", the more we learn there is no deal. Trump rushed out an "announcement" after a 70 minute conversation with Japan's trade negotiator and the press dutifully reported a deal. 1/ No text and widening disagreement on terms.
