They don't see their victims as people...worthy of empathy...what's more, they're sociopaths or psychopaths so they don't have empathy at all...now they have an outlet for their hate and anger

The people who don't see themselves as a villain doing this have long ago written off all immigrants as not people. They are protecting America from non-humans that are invading. Children, mothers, grandparents, etc are not seen by them as people. They are heroes fighting monsters in their mind.
That is a truly horrifying thought.

I think there are a lot of people out, for a multitude of reasons, that attracted to certain professions because they want to feel powerful and exert unconditional power over others and instill fear in others. This is the moment they’ve been waiting for to do just that.

I think it’s that they truly *do not care* about being the villain. The normal assumption is that they want to avoid it, but these people seem to relish being the villain. They voted for him to hurt people they hate, and he’s doing just that.
It's not weird - they signed up. They're on board. They probably love it. Sure, there's some outliers, but I'm sure these people love to exercise power, probably love white supremacy, or maybe think they are engaged in some noble goal to "protect America". They don't know America. Never will.

They have been trained their entire careers that they are heroes and everyday you do whatever you have to do to come home alive. They are told the world is out to get them and their lives are most important. This attitude is endemic at all levels of law enforcement and it's incredibly toxic.

Fair. Everyone has personal motives for taking these jobs, but they're not all completely cynical or focused on themselves. Their group culture may push them that way, but not everyone is a perfect expression of their culture.
