Kroger says it’s closing stores because of retail crime or high wages. But it’s really about one thing: corporate greed. I am excited to work with UFCW 3000 on their Fresh Food for All campaign to ensure that all neighborhoods in our city have access to healthy food and medicine.

Blaming having to pay your employees livable wages is the most pathetic excuse a business can make for their corporate failings and greed.

I live 1/2 mile from a Fred Meyer and I rarely shop there because it’s the most poorly managed grocery store I’ve ever been in. And it’s one that isn’t being closed.

No severance and healthcare for fired workers, $5 billion for shareholders, and probably executive bonuses on top of that.

If by "Corporate Greed" you mean following a normal business model and closing unprofitable operations, sure. But I feel like that's not a useful term if you could describe any business ever making any decision to improve their busienss as "Corporate Greed"

That’s why we need government owned grocery stores to fill the void left by corporations. And corporations that make billions of dollars should be taxed accordingly for their food deserts. That’s just desserts.

What’s your plan to tax corporations for food deserts, will this be a tax specifically on corporations that operate grocery stores

I haven’t thought this through but probably an increased marginal tax on profits over a certain amount, so it would only affect large national and regional chains.

Ok so the US will implement its first exception to the flat 21% corporate income tax, and it’s going to be specifically on grocers over any other industry and we want to encourage inefficiencies by incentivizing chains to split off each grocery store into its own corporation to avoid the tax

Would Amazon be considered a grocer under this scheme

Not going down a rabbit hole. 1% would probably be sufficient for subsidizing groceries in food desserts. Capitalism requires restraints, regulations, and oversight. Government needs to fill in the gaps.

And that regulation specifically must be a punitive measure upon one industry that has the exact same profit incentive as every single other industry

Yes. Heathy food is a necessity. If you prefer it be spread across all corporations I’m fine with that.
