I'm still waiting for the other shoe to drop on eliminating the penny. That's actually smart, there has to be something else going on there.
If that actually happens I'll give credit where due, it's good policy. Broken clock, etc. etc.
Countries that have eliminated their smallest coin have realized a need to increase production of the next smallest coin. The nickel costs 13¢ to produce. Eliminating the penny was a nice story. Should have eliminated the hundredths place and gotten rid of nickel and penny (and quarter?)
They're getting there now yeah but when we first eliminated the penny in Canada over a decade ago it only cost about 5 cents to make a nickel. Only in the past few years has the material cost for nickels shot up.
