Andrew Cuomo’s successful quest to shut down the Indian Point nuclear plant spiked electricity costs and dirtied the energy grid of the city he’s now running to lead.
Stupid people give stupid results
I’m sorry do you not remember 3 mile island or Fukushima or Chernobyl? It’s pretty dirty there. Nuclear is too dangerous and the potential catastrophic consequences of even a small accident make it not worth the risk, plus it’s not even financially viable w/o billions in subsidies for each plant
#NoCuomo!!! 👎🤬
🤡
Make it viral and keep doing it
Indian Point was a nuclear power plant sitting atop a known earthquake fault line. More than 30 million people live downwind of Indian Point. The risk of catastrophe was enormous. "New York has a goal to achieve 70% renewable energy by 2030 and a 100% zero-emission electricity grid by 2040."
SEXUAL PREDATORS NEED NOT BE IN GOVERNMENT. How FUCKING HARD is that to fucking understand? Says all women who have been harassed or abused by a sexual predator 💯 Believe me, it’s was waaaay worse before the #MeToo movement if you grew up in the 80’s, 90’s, and early 2000’s! It was normal practice
Let’s do a go fund me campaign to send Politico reporters on a nice vacation to the Fukushima exclusion zone.
I was stationed outside Insian Point for two years after 9/11.
Just die soon All the baby boomer politics just die already
he haunts New York
Why won’t this disgusting pig just go TF away! Hasn’t he been disgraced enough yet?
You had your chance Andy, and you will NEVER get me vote again.
He has his chance and blew it. Hey Andy! Stay home.
Nuclear power is expensive Denial is deep
Fuck #corrupt #cuomo #corruptCuomo
PERV ALERT.. hard pass NY.
Shutting down nuclear power is the least green move lmao cleanest source of energy we've ever found
Hindsight used against Cuomo, who SHOULD get credit for it, while Mamdani gets to just pretend he could have done better. Can't we use logic more deliberately in the assessment of AT LEAST energy? Holding up renewable projects is the problem, which is being done almost ENTIRELY without merit.
Holding up nuclear has been done for decades, look at the situation we are in. Anti-nuclear groups are Anti-climate
support for nuclear is stupid as hell, unless you want spent fuel buried under your house, fool
Ad-hominen, we could do with less. Have a nice day.
grow up.
Stop talking about this dinosaur
POS. Nuff said.
Just a casual observation; this man is aging very quickly. That seems to be true of so many politicians in the US, right now.
He's a pervert & he just needs to give it up. No one wants last year's moldy bread.......
Go to FL, Andrew, let someone younger have it
Notice he has Trump's small hands....you know the rest.
Indian Point was unstable and dangerous. Needed to be shut down. Find a better argument.
It wasnt

Opinion piece, about a transformer fire, that can happen at any high voltage switchyard and is anticipated for This is fearmongering, not journalism.
Smacking fannies and killing granny's Cuomo. There is nothing clean about that mobbed up Kennedy mob ties hanger on.
That power plant was a serious danger to the area. There was no way to evacuate the large number of residents if there was a meltdown.
failed governor, failed old school wannabe political boss. NYC deserves better
What happened to his face.
We must eliminate nuclear power plants and coal fired plants to save the earth! There is plenty of wind and sunlight to supply much more power than the world NEEDS! we dont need to be using our electricity for comforts like air conditioning as long as Africans are suffering!
True But I would start with the coal and leave the nuclear for a bit until enough solar+wind+storage is connected
Especially the storage in private homes will give people the option to earn money
You are one hundred percent right about this.
That comment is ignorance. Nuclear is a sustainable energy source and it provides. The challenges for clean energy (including electricity) are gigantic.
It is not!!! What do we do with the waste!!!!!
Everybody lies about this part. I wonder if they know what a half life is.
It's the one with the headcrab zombies, right?
What do you do with the massive amount of waste from wind and solar?
Nuclear waste is not yellow barrels of green glowing goo, just things like ceramic; gloves; etc. These are stored in concrete tanks until all radioactive particles decay. Waste management for nuclear plants may be a little hazardous, but its harmless if done right.
And as long as you don’t use a Fermi pile like the RBMK reactor used. Granted, the Navy pile isn’t 100% safe, Fukushima showed us that. But it’s safer than the RBMK…3 Mile Island showed us that. (Lost a reactor, saved the surrounding area.)
Waste is easily manageable. We can argue about the costs of construction, but waste is easily manageable.
BS. The waste is deadly toxic and has a 10,000 year half life, and there is still no viable solution for it.
Hilarious how many people will claim there are solutions to the nuclear waste problem without actually stating what it would be.
But there is so little nuclear waste being produced that effectively putting it into rockets wouldn't be unfeasible. People don't do that because there are safe places to store it at home(The deadliest accident involving nuclear waste involved a incorrectly disposed x-ray machine).
Sure there is. Yeet it into the sun with all the billionaires.
emissions from coal power plants release dozens of times more radiation into the environment than sealed nuclear waste casks (per unit of energy). we already have a safe/viable solution for long-term storage as well, but public fear over nuclear prevented it from going through.
Saying a long term solution exists (and is viable) is a lot different than proving it.
Ignorant of what is already done and recycling and some of the storage facilities.
Now that is actual bullshit. The waste generated, while having a long half life, can be easily stored safely, and the ratio of waste to power generated makes thinking that it's a problem laughable. To be anti-nuclear power you need to actively disregard all of the data and facts around it.
That's their secret cap, they always disregard facts and data
It needs appropriate regulations and educated and qualified people to keep up with them. BUT USA is reigning those in across the board. We've had two nuclear accidents in my lifetime. 1 negligence 2 on Earth's revenge. We still aren't aware of the damage. Safe as long as you're not irradiated.
So explain why there have been articles of "radioactive aligators" and entire towns of people being inflicted with radiation based cancers?
Educate yourself in science and what the practises are regarding spend nuclear fuel.
You don't need a "solution" for it, it's not like there is tons and tons of waste being generated every year. It's easily controllable.
WE'LL BE FINE
Nobody’s arguing for coal. There are plenty of other options. None are perfect, but most are better than creating 10,000 year toxic problems.
No, when people argue against nuclear they are in practice arguing for coal and natural gas. See Germany and New York. Specially because not all places have good sunlight and wind and because replacing oil for transportation will require a lot more energy.
25 years in commercial nuclear career w/ experience in political/public outreach. Always 1 person acting like spent fuel killed their dog. We've been dealing with spent fuel for decades. Zero events. We work and live near cask as sites. It's not really waste. Still usable w/ different tech.
Cost is associated with experience, each next build is easier and more scheduled and so better financed, the examples Russia, s-korea and Chinese builders.
Yes, but even the Chinese and French reactors aren't exactly cheap(But, yes, it's impossible to compete with fossil fuels if you are factoring price alone(Even if solar and wind are getting cheaper), but at least there is a debate here. Nuclear waste, not so much.
Cheap is having no energy. But there is no economy* in a nation without a complete set of energy sources in all it's physical forms. How do you operate and what choices of products and services do want to provide After all these question you can only say if the price is right or high, never cheap
Having no energy is expensive. Energy is infrastructure, see the countries that have to import gasoline for energy generation. But if we are thinking solely on costs then fossil fuel becomes hugely attractive.
What I was focusing on us, what do we think of as cost or benefits. Do we care about nothing then monetary value. I think not, cheap is a figurative assumption imho.
The cost of burning dead dinosaurs is the planet we live on. Way too high of a price.
That's my point. If you disregard externalities(Like health issues and climate change) then fossil fuels are easily the best cost-benefit. I worry about the costs of construction of reactors, but I also think that worrying too much about it boosters fossil fuels(See Germany).
You should ask the same question about forever toxic chemicals, some coming from renewables, that must be stored forever. The same solution applies for nuclear
Well at least some of it gets recycled into medical isotopes.
If we used metallic fuel, we reprocess it, recover the fissile material, and separate out the plutonium. They do that in Europe.
The second worse president jimmy carter made that illegal. www.forbes.com/sites/realsp...
Wrong. We need better basal load power sources. Coal definitely needs to go, but we can do better with fission. We’re even seeing some promising developments with fusion. This is not to say we shouldn’t use renewable energy, like solar and wind. It’s substantial, just not enough for base load.
Cuomo is the rot from within. Look at the deal he made with Green Apple that runs the rest areas on NY 90. He gave them a deal where they get all of the profit and NY citizens get none. NY paid for the construction of the rest areas but reaps none of the profits from the over priced transactions.
Como just get the fuck out of everyone's life you're pitiful
He is bad news on all topics.
An old fart should know when retire. Either you die hero or you live long enough to become a villain. Here you have Cuomo on the latter of the options.
#SayNoToHasBeens!
This other political grabber clown can't find a real job.
He doesn’t look well.
Should have been shut down when his father was Governor
Outreach OE: Between 2007 and 2021* anti-nuclear bot/troll farm activity spiked any time Sanders was getting a lot of attention or studies indicated increased support for nuclear. I see some posts here that are very reminiscent of that period. Structure posts to persuade readers, not the poster.
Cuomo has aged so much. He should not be running.
Haha loser
Totally forgot about this. What an absolute horrible move.
For some reason it feels like a colossal waste of time that people write articles about Cuomo, considering he's already lost one election against Mamdani.
Perhaps it’s a part of his audition tape for Fox News.
A lot of them are amusing, though. And can you even imagine what it will be like if he somehow wins? He won't
their concern here isn't that he wins, it's that he (and Adams) split the democrat vote evenly enough to give the Silwa the plurality. that's not super likely, either, but…
But how can he run if he lost against the other democrat? And het should be running on a republican ticket, listening how positive Trump is about him
he's running as an independent. same as eric adams.
What a mess this race is. I can't wait till it's over. Thanks for reminding me, I forget Silwa is even in the race. I never hear about him
checked the results for the last election and he only got like 20% of the vote, so it would be some kind of (anti-)miracle for him to win. people're still really cautious about this kind of thing at this point though…
He's asking for trouble...!
Cause he only does things to help himself
"We hate him so much that we like nuclear power now"
"we found out afterwards how wrong we were, that we also see the necessity of nuclear"
Not for an ancient plant that should have been decommissioned years before and shouldn’t have been built in that location at all
Your opinion is voided. The NRC has licensed and was still licensensing the 2 reactors. The revoking of the Water-license by Cuomo and helped by riverkeepers (JKF jr.) cause the closure. It has provided clean energy for decades.
My opinion “is voided”? Who talks like that? The location was stupid. The NRC decided at some point to extend the ok on the life of nuclear plants — doesn’t make them safer. When the plant was built, the limit was 30 years (I think) And the Jr you’re thinking of is RFK not JFK
And NO, since the river and fish were affected in that area, you don’t get to call it “clean” energy
Not a limit, just a period. And it was 40 years. Then a renewal of a decade or 2. Today reactor get license periods that take to 80 years, very likely some will get to 100. I'm sry your stuck in the anti-nuclear talking points
Indian Pt was not built “today”. It was built to the specifications of a plant to be decommissioned in 40 years. It was built in an active earthquake zone that is a confluence of many fault lines including one that had 4.1 mag quake in the eighties. It is also in a highly populated area that would…
…be catastrophic in either an accident or intentional disaster. You clearly know nothing about the area or this particular plant I said nothing that was anti-nuclear energy
No that's not how the license works. And reactors have upgrades trough there lifetime A quake is not an un- anticipated point. It is fearmongering you do imho. A shame you spend your energy on negativity.
Who would have thought people needed increased rates of asthma to recognize no one had a plan to maintain air quality
Do you think that's true? Did people change their minds?
Yes, people were mostly uneducated, not so much against it.
Don’t even think about it New York! Good God
Do us all here in NY a favor Politico and stop covering and man who lost we won’t vote for him and we will destroy his life we don want a Trump puppet in NY, if Cuomo wins he will allow trump to militarize our state and that going to be a really bad day for Cuomo really bad!!
I'm no fan of Cuomo. But a nuclear power plant with spent rods cooling on site 25 miles from the biggest city in the country is INSANE and DANGEROUS The planes on 9/11 flew right over if one had crashed into Indian Point millions could've died
The company in charge of storing the fuel rods and water wanted to dump the water into the Hudson! Fortunately, that was stopped.
AND The processing water for the entire plant was pumped into the Hudson on a 24/7 basis, destroying the ecosysyem and potentially harming everyone coming in contact with the river.
Yes, besides the temperature change, fish fry were killed by impingement as they got sucked through the pipes. The facility was conceived when the Hudson was considered a "dead river", so at first this was no concern.
Nonsense, this is fearmongering.
It's not nonsense. The plant was operational long past the time it was supposed to be decommissioned. The other problem is the population living in the area had increased to a size that never could be evacuated.
No, in the USA reactors simply all got a first license of 40yrs. After that a ten or twenty Yr renewal is being licensed. Upgrades are installed etc. Reactors are getting this towards 80 years in total now.
I can see you are knee deep in this pov.
I provide you how it had been going, you provide an opinion, so that is a pov. If you really want to see what happened look into the data the NRC has.
My opinion is based on fact: The fact that I live near Indian Point. I was somewhat active in helping getting it shut down. Most people in my area wanted it decommissioned.
Same here
Thx for being as terrible for the enviroment and the climate as the fossil proponents!
Thanx. I hope you have a good day working at the plant.
Tell that to the people within a few hundred miles of Chernobyl
What safe place do they store the used fuel rods?
No safe place but near large populations, it's far more dangerous
First years in a water basin. After that in the USA there stored dry cask, rated to keep them for over a century. While politician can argue about nimby issues. There is one permanent storage facility, I think that is only for military sources. Ps: Finland has a permant site for commercial fuel.
Yes, sitting for years in a refrigerated water basin open to the sky.
How do you come up with these silly ideas.
www.whatisnuclear.com is a good place to educate yourself.
By reading books written by experts and not random stuff on the Internet written by nobodies.
Shutting down existing nuclear plants is stupidity. 99% off the cost, 99% of the risk, 99% of the environmental damage has already been taken when it's turned on. The nuclear waste and plant doesn't simply disappear.
He's cooked?
With that skin texture, he looks overdone
Noooooo! Please New Yorkers don’t let these grifters fool you!
Why can't we get rid of the worst of the worst. They keep bouncing back like boomerangs every time you think they are out
So, shutting down a nuclear plant with storms getting stronger and the east coast getting hit harder is a bad thing? 😆
bsky.app/profile/gp5....
That comment is ignorance. Nuclear is a sustainable energy source and it provides. The challenges for clean energy (including electricity) are gigantic. Ps: doubled it for saving, as facts often get blocked.
I think Cuomo should sit this one out
He looks like a corpse with Monkey Pox.
He 👀 old
he is prune come to life
that guy looks incredibly old
The US needs to stop running white geriatric politicians (sorry Bernie, I ❤️ you, man but..) and let some #bipoc folk step into the spotlight (like AOC and Jasmine Crockett). Y'all need some robust, 24/7 balls to the wall people to fight against what's coming your way! #aoc #powertothepeople
This ghoul needs to go back to hell and screw up there, not stay here and decompose in public.
Oh, a WEF green agenda supporting news outlet critising a green move. Wow.
When you are a celebrity, you can put your hands anywhere.
Go tf away, dude. Like.... no means no.
#NoMeansNO
Damn he got some ugly hands 😜
introspectivenews.substack.com/p/zohran-mam...
I see Andrew has been to the same beauty shop as RFK Jr.
Woah, he is not looking very well.
Cuomo looks so much older now.
Didn't know that. Check out my posts. medium.com/@johnppjc/th... medium.com/@johnppjc/lo...
My stomach starts hurting every time I look at him. That's not a good omen.
He needs to go away.
Indian Point was not safe. One of the few things he did right.
Another truth slayer giving lip service to politicks
No Cuomo!! And that includes his brother too!
Nuclear energy is dirty. We need to get rid of all nuclear power plants around the world if we want to mitigate the damage that climate changes causing to the Earth.
Was he shutting down an aging nuclear facility for safety reasons, or was it some pissing contest?
