Another fun fact: both my Mom and Dad’s side have done the 2nd name thing for 3 generations. No idea why?

The older I get the less tied to tradition I become. And I’ve deprogrammed myself from some Japanese traditions that I’ve internalized over the years. Which is not to say that cultural are irrelevant. But it is unfair to demand that the next generation conform to the past for no good reason.

I have a feeling it's an English tradition eg: James Paul McCartney.

Interesting. One of my grandfathers was Irish, but my other 3 grandparents were Indigenous. Although my g-grandma used to fake an English accent when she answered the phone… maybe she faked other English things, too. 🤷🏻‍♀️

The McCartneys had Irish ancestry. Paul's brother was Peter Michael (known as Mike) and their father was also James (known as Jim). So the son had the father's name formally, but not around the house.

Could be. Father's side of the family is originally from someplace in northern England. My great-grandfather immigrated to Canada before WWI. Had a sewing machine shop or something, and then worked as a refrigeration mechanic on the railways. So, I suppose lower-middle class or petite bourgeoise.
