We don't, or at least we shouldn't, hand out justice by the way victims feel about it. We aren't doing eye for an eye here. Of course, Rice didn't actually injure anyone or ruin any lives here and that does actually matter when it comes to the justice that gets handed out.

100%. Had he ruined lives like Britt Reid or Henry Ruggs, he'd be in prison. He didn't, though, and what actually happened matters.

Britt Reid is so privileged his sentence was commuted by the governor. Terrible example

Reid shouldn't have got early release, but the prosecutor did actually throw him in jail for an appropriate amount of time before the corrupt governor got involved.

Don’t you see the privilege that athletes have? You think if Rice wasn’t a football player, he’d get the same sentence?

I see the privilege rich people have. I see the privilege white people have. I don't think there is an extra special athlete privilege. For a 1st time offender who wasn't drunk and apparently didn't seriously injure someone, 30 days + probation seems pretty normal. 🤷‍♂️

Their privilege is that they’re rich and won’t have their jobs impacted by their criminal behavior. Would your employer take any action if they found out you were arrested in a hit and run?

No. Maybe this is my privilege talking, but I don't think there are lots of jobs where people get fired and blackballed forever for a hit and run.

Well I unfortunately am aware of several employers, especially in the public sector, that would fire someone for this type of behavior because it reflects so poorly on who the employer trusts etc

Fair enough, but it's harsh. We live in an overly punitive society. We incarcerate a higher percentage of our citizens than any other country on earth. We are terrible at rehabilitation. I just don't have it in me to destroy the lives of idiot 23 yo's that didn't cause great harm.
