When Labor Day was est. as a holiday in 1894, ~ 30 yrs from slavery’s abolishment, it represented a key U.S. paradox: Black workers continued to be excluded from labor unions and benefits via Jim Crow laws, systemic racism, sharecropping systems, and other exclusionary labor practices. #BlackSky

W.E.B. DuBois described the American Civil War as a “General Strike” because of the 100s of thousands of enslaved people who stopped their work, many of whom also joined the Union Army. Slavery offers a powerful example of what it looks like when the law prioritizes "property" over human beings.
