The skin of the elderly becomes quite friable, especially in thin places like the back of the hand. Large bruises can result from minor injury, such a contact with a doorway.

Blood thinners aggravate that tendency, as I know from experience (73+ years) but I can’t imagine the level of vanity required to obscure the purpling.
