Take your federal withholding from your current paychecks down to zero NOW and put that amount in savings of your own. You earn the interest. And in 26 we decide if we pay federal or not. But if enough of us do this we can starve them now.
That would be a good idea if the system weren’t rigged. Underpayment penalties exist, and interest is charged: www.irs.gov/payments/und...
Yes, but the IRS (and govt) is seriously understaffed and incompetent so, if it comes down to it, you can set up a payment plan. I'm hedging my bets that it could be years before they notice.
But if they DO notice, you owe plus interest. I’m not saying you should change, just that ideally you pay just enough so you get the tiniest of refunds, but if you make a mistake, you get penalized for holding onto your money
One thing you can do is lower your income to the point where your quarterly taxes are minimal, you just have to make sure to file. Like.. pay your FICA. That assumes you can live on the minimal income.
I think you have to pay quarterly or risk being fined and prosecuted.
Yes yes yes
Beware the tax underpayment penalty — IRS penalizes if you owe too much by tax time. Anyone know how to pull this off w/o incurring add’tl penalty? Maybe less penalty if tax is paid in lump sum toward end of year earned instead of every month? Contribute to IRA to lower tax bill?
Also, beware that if you work in certain industries, such as the financial sector, your employer could frown upon you trying to circumvent the tax laws.
If 10 million people refuse to pay taxes, the IRS can’t pursue us all. And if they happen to pursue you, pay up, and they go away.

I have been doing this since 2016 when hubs and I retired. I haven't paid fed taxes since and have not gotten any returns either. They can't play with my $. I don't make enough to pay taxes so why would I hand it to them and wait to get it back?
