"Assault Weapon" was not used by the Nazis in WW2 in relation to rifles. Assault weapon is a legit term used for anti tank/fortification weapons, and was co-opted by gun writers incorrectly in the mid 60s.
The term assault rifle wasn't invented by the krauts during WW2 either, it was coined by Col. Isaac Lewis during WW1 as a lightweight automatic rifle and was "between and betwixt an infantry rifle and a machine gun".
