Always a sausage sizzle ( fund raising for local CFA or SES) definitely a cake stall with jams and pickles for sale and possibly a plant stall as well. It’s all very local neighbourhood feel and totally chill.

Of course. I forgot that. Seems so obvious that in a democracy you’d have voting on a day when the majority of the people can get to the poles. I was very surprised the US had it on a Tuesday last time. I mean, a TUESDAY! Whaat!!

I love this! All of it! Canada needs this. Can I ask, would you say that people over all are more politically engaged? I would imagine that completely clueless people are voting and just checking random boxes. Without a lie, many people here couldn’t tell you who the prime minister is.

Overall I would say Australians are very politically engaged. Is voting mandatory in Canada? I always presumed it was very much like Australia. Election eve in Aus has always been wall to wall coverage of the vote on TV and friends gathering together for drinks to watch. Very social, very engaged

And if any of our elected officials EVER tried to sell gold sneakers or aftershave they would, in all likelihood, have said shoe or fragrance bottle launched at their head and publicly be called an absolute wanker

Unfortunately voting is not mandatory in Canada.

I am surprised by this. It really gets the 18 year olds out to vote because the fine of $102 is a considerable amount of money when you’re 18.

I agree. The penalties for not filling out the census are worse than for not voting ($500 versus $0).

Crazy! We have 5 boys and the fine made them all wake up to the concept of voting as a both privilege AND a duty in a democracy. Voting day has its own special vibe here and you’d really have to be totally switched off to not know it’s happening. The smell of bbq sausages fills the air!
