Crazy! We have 5 boys and the fine made them all wake up to the concept of voting as a both privilege AND a duty in a democracy. Voting day has its own special vibe here and you’d really have to be totally switched off to not know it’s happening. The smell of bbq sausages fills the air!
I am surprised by this. It really gets the 18 year olds out to vote because the fine of $102 is a considerable amount of money when you’re 18.

Overall I would say Australians are very politically engaged. Is voting mandatory in Canada? I always presumed it was very much like Australia. Election eve in Aus has always been wall to wall coverage of the vote on TV and friends gathering together for drinks to watch. Very social, very engaged
Always a sausage sizzle ( fund raising for local CFA or SES) definitely a cake stall with jams and pickles for sale and possibly a plant stall as well. It’s all very local neighbourhood feel and totally chill.
Correct. Anyone 18 and above has to vote or get a fine ( as of July 2025 the fine is $102 Aus dollars) postal votes are used by many, especially the elderly, or if you’re going to be away on holidays you can early postal vote. On the actual election day there are voting stations everywhere.
