This reminds me of my father in law, who threw an enormous wobble in Tesco because all the cheese was "foriegn" and it was replacing traditional british cheeses and thats why he was voting for Brexit. He was standing in the "International Cheeses" aisle.
I should belatedly point out that I adore my father in law, regretable cheese moments notwithstanding.

It goes without saying that sourdough is the earlier/historical bread, of course. And it toasts nicely.
When I was growing up, all bread was based on sourdough. Only rolls and baguettes were made with yeast. And lots of sweet bakes. And that’s 70s and 80s Poland. Not centuries ago. I still recall people who visited the UK complaining about crap plastic white bread (the sliced kind).
But it really is down to what you buy. If you buy crap, you eat crap. It’s astonishing to me that someone can look at the abundance of choice we have these days, and still find something to complain about. Especially in such a blatantly disingenuous manner as that Pearson bint above.
I love a milk bread! Fabulous sandwich bread! I make them all the time - and they are vastly superior to the terrifying things in the plastic at the supermarket.
Toasted Sourdough with all the butter and honey is a thing of joy. It would probably even make Alex Phillips smile…..

I don't 'love' sourdough, but I don't hate it. I just like about 10 other breads before it. Bland white wonderbread did not make the list. That one does look adorable though, I will give you that. Catwalk ready!

I think the only thing that would make Alex Phillips smile would be a big bonfire burning all the sourdough, and the sourdough makers and eaters along with it. Right next to a bonfire burning all the books that aren’t white and fluffy enough. While toasting marshmallows and watching ICE abuse kids.
Have ranted about this before, but so many of these people's concept of anything "traditional" dates back to no earlier than about 1947

I did try. And I bought him some nice Davidstow Cheddar and a Shropshire Blue, from Tesco, to prove that they hadn't banned British cheese.... I did also point out that voting in a way that would deprive us of delicious European cheese was possibly a silly idea, but he wasn't having that.
Shropshire Blue does sound amazing.
I'm not a big lover of blue cheese but yes, it is lovely.
