I got to pet a dog yesterday, not a common occurence for me since I have no pets and the dog I do love, my niece's corgi Darwin, lives several states away. His person ran the lot where I parked my car. He rescued the dog the same day he put his 13-year-old dog down after a dx of thyroid cancer.
The very good boi he rescued is a 4 yo mix who sat calmly in the golf cart the whole time and only put his paw out when he wanted me to scritch him more (with both hands instead of one). He was going to be euthanized the day he was rescued because of lack of adopter interest and shelter capacity.
The man who rescued him said he wasn't sure he was ready for another dog, and that adopting a puppy wouldn't be fair to the puppy since the man is 80 years old. And he said that this boi is so similar to his beloved old girl that he feels like she must have had a paw in sending this boi his way.

I'm so glad it worked out for both of them. I hope they both live long and happy lives with many good times together.
I told him as much before I left.
